Valve rejoins the VR hardware wars with standalone Steam Frame

Briefing

Valve is making a significant comeback in the virtual reality hardware space with the announcement of the Steam Frame, expected to launch in early 2026. This standalone headset will support both VR and traditional Steam games, allowing users to play locally through SteamOS or stream from a PC. The device features a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor, 16 GB of RAM, and a display resolution of 2160 x 2160 per eye, with a field of view of up to 110 degrees and refresh rates up to 144 Hz.

For developers, the Steam Frame represents a new platform for VR content, potentially expanding the audience for VR games. With storage options of 256GB and 1TB, plus microSD expansion, developers can create more extensive and immersive experiences. As Valve re-enters the market, it could lead to increased competition and innovation in VR gaming, which is crucial for the industry's growth.

“Valve is finally ready to officially rejoin the VR hardware race.”
