Yesterday I got a surprise (although it shouldn't have been) delivery of:


Business and Production: A GameDev.net Collection


Whilst I knew about the title a while ago it appears to have just been released for general consumption. I suggest you just go straight to the best article in the book on pp150 (or read it for free here). Yup, an article of mine from waaaay back in July 2001 is now available in hardcopy.

I re-read it on the tube home last night and was pleasently surprised to see it still stands up reasonably well today. For me its quite interesting to note how my writing style has evolved over 7.5 years and that, whilst a bit naive and green, my comments on software development are reasonably on target.

The bulk of the content isn't really aimed at someone like me, but I had a flick through it whilst I was waiting for friends in the pub (you get some odd looks when reading these sorts of books in an Irish pub [grin]) and its good material. I can easily see the writing style and content suiting the sort of audience that would want a primer in business and production of games.

Its also good to see GDNet diversifying and making use of the vast library of articles they host. I definitely like the model of being able to pay a few quid for a print copy whilst still being able to read (most of) the articles for free online. If I'm reading more than a few pages then I don't want to do that on a computer screen!

Congrats to Drew and John and all the other authors for getting the book out the door [totally] [cool]

Thinking of reading books and my comments about not reading on-screen...

I see that Amazon have made a little bit of noise about their new Kindle e-reader. I can't justify the GBP200-GBP300 price tag but its definitely the first gadget (an e-reader that is, not specifically a kindle) where I've been tempted to get one regardless of whether I can afford it. I think it'd definitely add some value and be useful rather than just a gimmick - especially if they can render txt/html/pdf documents. I could easily enjoy grabbing a bunch of tech articles and conference slides from the net, putting them on my reader and working my way through them on the way to/from work throughout the week...


All that waffle aside, and no matter how good the GDNet books or Kindle are, I also got this delivered.
