GameDev.net Just Got a Major Upgrade
Hey everyone,
If you've logged in recently you've probably noticed things look… different. That's because we've rolled out a completely rebuilt version of the site. This has been in progress for a while now, and a bunch of you helped test it during the beta. Thanks for that — your feedback directly shaped what shipped.
I want to walk through what changed and why.
The Short Version
Same site, same accounts, same content, same URLs. Nothing you've posted or earned has gone anywhere. The underlying platform got a full rebuild — new frontend, new tooling, new backend systems where it mattered.
Why Bother?
Game developers today are spread across a dozen platforms. Discord, Reddit, YouTube, Twitter, engine-specific forums. Knowledge gets scattered, conversations disappear, nothing compounds. I still think there's a place for a site where your work, your discussions, and your reputation stick around and actually build over time as a central hub for gaming technology and game development. But the old interface wasn't making a strong case for that.
So we rebuilt it.
What Actually Changed
The whole UI. Modern layout, works properly on mobile, consistent dark mode for those who want it. Faster page loads across the board.
Your homepage. It now shows you stuff that's actually relevant — industry news, active forum threads, community content, and activity on your own posts. It's not an algorithmic feed. It's just a clean view of what's happening.
News system. This is brand new. We're pulling from dozens of game dev news sources, clustering related stories, and running them through AI for summaries, key facts, and entity linking. Think of it as a curated industry briefing — no editorializing, just structured information. We want this to be your daily technology briefing.
Forums. Same threads, same posts, new presentation. Smart date formatting, inline reactions, better code blocks, a proper rich text editor. Your existing content is all there.
Content tools. Tutorials have a real submission/review workflow now. Blog editor is much better. Projects support team invitations and tabbed editing. Portfolios are fully wired in.
Messaging. Rebuilt from scratch — chat-style UI, reactions, read receipts, search, archiving. Your old conversations are preserved and accessible.
Anti-spam and trust. New trust tier system based on account age, reputation, and actual behavior. AI-assisted content classification running alongside it. Should mean less spam without bothering legitimate users.
Notifications. Unified system that actually covers everything — forum replies, likes, mentions, blog comments, the works. Email digests included.
Your Old Stuff Is Fine
I want to be clear about this:
Your account, posts, reputation, and history are exactly where they were
Every existing URL still works — nothing got redirected or broken
This is a platform upgrade, not a reboot
If You Hate It
Fair. You can switch back to the classic layout anytime — there's a toggle in your account menu and in the bottom right of the screen. Classic mode will stay available while we're in the transition period. Our goal is to make the new version good enough that you want to stay, not to corner you into it. Improvements will continue with the new version.

What's Coming Next
This is the foundation. Still on the roadmap:
Guilds — topic-based community spaces that go beyond traditional forum categories
Learning paths — curated collections of tutorials, talks, and resources by topic
Developer profiles / Ludography — pages that showcase your games and credits
Notification preferences — per-channel, per-type controls
Thanks
To the beta testers, the moderators, and everyone who's contributed to this community over the years — thanks for sticking around. This site exists because of the people who use it.
Let me know what you think.
