Greetings, Fellow Forumers,
My name is Jason Bishop. I am the project leader for Wildfire Games' real time strategy project titled "0 A.D.". The game is a freeware historical RTS set in the timeframe of 500 BC to 500 AD, centering around the civilisation of Rome. If your looking for an opportunity to add to your resumé, this is a great project. Look no further! The WFG team is full of talented people who love RTS games and love making games.
We just reached our one-year anniversary and have laid down some great foundational work. Some of the accomplishments of the past year were creating a website with 70+ pages, preliminary work with the AI, a prototype engine, a 150+ page design document, completing roughly 25% of the artwork, 6 musical tracks, 1 promotional video, and gaining a 'foot hold' in the amateur game development world. Unfortunately, our lead programmer has recently been forced to step down from his position, due to the lack of free time he has available while attending college. So, I'm looking for someone to fill his shoes, ideally with the following skills:
- Excellent people skills (friendly, offers support, and constructive criticism)
- High level of general programming knowledge, and a well-rounded coding background
- Most importantly, able to devote a significant amount of time to this role
- emailing (to ensure that the programming team has all the information they need)
- reviewing new applicants -answering questions in our forums
- Assign projects to individual programmers (or groups of programmers)
- laying out the architecture for the engine
- helping to write graphics code
1 Graphics programmer, well versed in DX (our former lead programmer) 2 AI programmers 1 Multiplayer programmer 1 Tools programmer 2 Prototype engine programmer 1 Programmer who has background in databases and python scripting
We regularly receive applications from enthusiastic programmers, so the team can be expanded if necessary.
We plan to use a 2d/3d hybrid engine. Sprites will be used for the majority of the art (buildings, units). By using pre-rendered sprites, we hope to attain a better image quality for our units, while still benefiting from smooth-shaded terrain, a particle engine, alpha blending, and many more powerful tools that the 3d engine has to offer. Right now we are concentrating on making tools - an assembly (file archiving/compression) program and an animation packaging program for creating our custom sprites. We plan to develop the graphics engine under DX9, but if there is a VERY capable OGL programmer we would consider switching.
If you would like more information, don't hesitate to ask here in the forums... and be sure to check out our website. If you're interested in applying or have any questions, email me (Wijitmaker@juno.com) or go to this page and fill out the application form. An interview (via Instant Messenger) and code sample are required.
Thank you for your time and I wish you all the best in your endeavours, whatever they might be!
~Jason Bishop (aka Wijitmaker)
