nVidia apparently a benchmark cheat

Read all about it. Guess they''re really feeling the pressure from ATI''s excellent job on it''s last few product releases.

I remember when I was disgusted with the Radeon ad at GameDev.net. Now I have a Radeon of my own and after reading that article, I''m disgusted with nVidia. Not that ATI hasn''t ever cheated, though.

That article is pretty dubious. They''re reading far more into those artifacts than there is evidence for. If nvidia really were cheating then the evidence would not be apparent from just looking at screenshots. A few visual errors are far more likely to be driver bugs.

Aside from that, ATi have been cheating with their FSAA and supposedly amazing antialiasing performance for ages, and none of the major benchmarking sites have noticed. Anyone who''s ever seen a radeon 9700 rendering alpha-tested quads knows that the FSAA is only edge-based, whereas the nvidia implementation is genuinely full screen, which goes a long way to explaining the amazing FSAA performance lead reviewers have been raving about for ages. My old GF2 Pro has far better quality FSAA than my Radeon 9700 is capable of.

Are there companies that don''t cheat on benchmarks?

nVidia cheater or not is the card I will always buy and support. They make games look good and they help support the industry of games as opposed to just making cards.

And ATI doesn''t? I suppose you have lots of experience working with nVIDIA and ATI developer support?

I''m still waiting for the anti-ben argument.

IMO extremetech is trying to draw traffic, since they don''t have any interesting benchmarks(Doom3 anyone?) on the new video cards.

Honestly, 3dmark is a retarded benchmark, people should use real, modern games instead - Unreal 2, Doom3, half-life 2, etc

This is a daft accusation - nVidia havn''t supported hardware clip planes for any of their hardware (unless its been added recently?) so adding ''hardwired'' clip planes wouldn''t help.

If they had any real credability, they''d be trying to break the drivers from detecting it as the benchmark, to turn off the alleged demo-specific optimisations (what was that Ati one? changing quake.exe to wuake.exe and found texture quality suddenly jumping to how it should have been).

New information, from Futuremark''s site.

quote:

We have now established that NVIDIA’s Detonator FX drivers contain certain detection mechanisms that cause an artificially high score when using 3DMark®03. We have just published a patch 330 for 3DMark03 that defeats the detection mechanisms in the drivers and provides correct results.

I guess they didn''t agree with you guys.

That''s right. I think futuremark is a bane on society and completely useless. They, for some strange reason, seem to disagree.

Yes yes, thank you for your opinion. Unreal 2 is made for DirectX 8.1, so benchmarking modern video cards with it would leave a huge bunch of the card's power unused. I should also mention that Doom 3 and Half-Life 2 aren't even out yet, so benchmarking with them would be quite difficult for a private person. The fact is, most of the modern games are for DirectX 8 and don't really qualify for benchmarking your DirectX 9.0 card.

Futuremark's benchmarks do give an idea of how well games that use the most of your card's strengths will work for you, even before such games are published. (Just think of the company's name: Future Mark )

Can't trust no one, no how these days.
