Do real game development studios use directx?

I was just wondering if directx is used by the pros. Is it free to use commercially,or do you have to buy a license?How long does it take to master directx?(Semi-Master I mean)What is the best book to learn it from? Does directx build everything with triangles,just wondering cause everything i see is triangles. Thanks for all your input and for puting up with all of my questions. Also is it legal to make mods for games? Thanks, Cory(also happens to be drunk);

Yes.
Free.
Time depends on what you''re trying to do.
Book? I learned from the SDK and online tutorials
No, but triangles are the choice among many people.
Yes, it''s legal provided you don''t steal graphics or code. Read the EULA for the specific game.

Call me names all you want but it won''t make me feel any worse or you feel any better.

See that "For Beginners" heading up there? That means that this is introductory questions. That means there are really not that many stupid questions. That means you're way out of line. Take it elsewhere.

it sort of is built using lots of triangles (strips), two make a square, and just add more for additional polygon sides (fans).

I thought that *real* game development studios tend to be pre-made engines, since they don''t have time to spend developing their own. If they buy an engine, they rarely (if ever) have to deal with an API like DirectX or OpenGL directly.

Some of them make their own engines, what they use as a renderer is anyones guess (although I suppose it''s probably either opengl or directx).

lol yeah because its lot better and more modern than openGl and well has a lot more besides gfx.

The good thing about it is once you have got your head around how it works moving to sound and input is a easy.

as for the arsehole that was rude to the guy for asking questions how the feck did you learn this stuff born with the knowledge where you!!! get a grip and leave posting like that outside these boards.

More "modern"? How''s that? Thanks to OpenGL''s extension architecture, it''s consistently been significantly more quick than Direct3D to support new graphics card features.

Yeah sure, he must be planning on a serious overhaul of Doom III so.

I can barely understand what you're saying. Try to spell right, you sound like an immature little kid. OpenGL and Direct3D are both equally good renderers and neither is better than the other.

Well, that''s interesting, maybe you should try telling him that, considering his latest engine is still using opengl.

I''d think directX would be used by the pros, I mean most games say "Requires Direct X" and usually have the install files for it on the game cd. But then of course I could be wrong.

Uhh you realize Carmack is on the OpenGL ARB as a participating member right?

He has pioneered many OpenGL tech features, and all his engines use OpenGL.

DirectX doesn't have more "stuff". It's irrelevant to compare DirectX to OpenGL, you compare Direct3D to OpenGL, in which case they are both graphic APIs that talk to your 3D hardware. In which case there is no difference aside from different APIs to do so with.

OpenGL is great for portability. It is the choice if you want an engine to be cross platform.

My personal preference is to abstract your engine to support swappable renderers. That way if a particular card handles either API better, the end user has the option to use that API.

Lots of games say "Requires Direct X" because DX is not just for 3D. It has sound, input, and networking components as well. You can have an engine using OpenGL for rendering, and DirectInput, DirectSound, etc.. In which case you still need Direct X installed.
