Here's where having anonymous posts on the lounge would come in useful. :p So, anyone here ever used an online dating service like LavaLife? If so, how did it turn out? I'm contemplating using such a service myself, because I can't seem to get women face-to-face (more out of shyness and not taking action than my behavior, as hard as it may be for some to believe). I don't think I'll get agressive enough for meeting women IRL for a while, which leads to me wondering if online dating services might be an excellent stopgap.

I actually met a potential (female) roomate through roomate.com which is kind of similar. It didn't work out because she decided to go to a different school, but it wasn't as bad as you might think. Obviously the intent was not to actually DATE my roomate, but we did go out for lunch and stuff to get to know each other and see if we would get along well, and it wasn't that bad, and she was actually pretty nice. We both acknowledged that it felt weird meeting someone you had only met and talked to on the internet, not knowing what to expect. I suppose dating would be a little stranger, though. I don't know anyone that has actually tried it.

There is one.. It's called IRC :)

Seriously, it could be cool.. A kind of MMORPG with pubs and rides, but with a bit stricter checking of gender and the like of the players. The players could chat, have more graphic cyber sex :), play games etc. Actually, apart from the stricter checking stuff, I think second life is not too unlike this.. It has more focus on the ability to create things online, but people can go on virtual dates in the various lounges and rides that people have created. Creating a virtual dating service in SL should probably also be possible :)

EDIT: I went on a RL date with a girl I met on IRC once.. It felt weird though, so I've only done it once and nothing evolved from it..

I actually dated a girl for eight months that I met through one of those services. It was rather hilarious because she lived no more than 30 seconds from my residence hall down the road, turned out to be a great relationship and we split on mutual grounds. I wouldn't mind trying it again because it seems all the women at my school that I know about are either a) taken by long-term boyfriends or b) not my type.

Well, I signed up on LavaLife. Thing is, too, I'm not just looking for girls to date. I'm also looking for more mature ladies for *ahem* fun. Know of any other decent sites, perhaps ones where I don't have to pay up $$$?

MatchDoctor is a free site, the one I used to meet this girl. Best of luck to you! [smile]

I've met a couple people through personals sites. Never ended up dating any of them, but made some friends. I think it's a good way to meet people; your milage may vary.

I particularly recommend OKCupid, which is much more fun than your average match site, and free besides.

So, how long did it usually take before finding someone (or vice versa)?

I don't have any experience besides the roomate thing I mentioned earlier, but if you are serious about finding someone like this, you MUST include a picture. I have searched these databases before, just to see what kinds of women are signing up for them, and usually I select pictures only. Maybe it's just me, but I need a face to associate with the name. Just a small hint if you want to get people to respond.

Just give up.

You will die cold and alone.

Or you could just stop masturbating for a month or so. Then we'll see if you're "aggressive" enough to meet women IRL.

I haven't forgotten to include a photo, although it might not be the best. Unfortunately, that's as good as it gets for photos of me...

No worries cold, usually what I do is when I sign up, I browse the locals and shoot any person that I might be interested in a message regarding something they said in their profile. Never just come right out and say, "Hey babe, you're hot, check my profile." Find common ground, establish a base ground of trust, then when you're comfortable, suggesting meeting in a public place during the day. I trip to the zoo is a great idea, lots of people, cute animals, and the potential to get her that stuffed lion when she's in the bathroom if you think things are going well. Rememeber, keep the starting conversations casual, you know nothing beyond what they provide you, and it takes time to get to know the "real" them. Best of luck and happy searching!

Terry: Regarding Anne, welcome to three weeks ago. As for dancing, no offense, but I prefer to do real dancing, not pretending to be a pogo stick.

Word of advice?

Don't smile ... you see, if you smile, then you're nice and happy and stuff. If you don't smile, then you're a grade A badass. And, more importantly, I'd take a bunch of different pictures, then take the 5 you like best or whatever, then post them on hot or not, then see which one gets the best rating, and use that one.

Given that you're joining a pre-existing userbase, if you don't spot anyone you're interested in on your first search, you may have a long wait. :P

Like Peon said, definitely put up a photo. And since you're a straight guy, be prepared to make the first move. And be prepared to be ignored some of the time, too. Straight girls get contacted a lot -- the gender ratio is in their favor -- and silence seems to be the preferred method of saying "no thanks."

Oh, and don't use the "woo" feature on OKCupid. If you're shy, it may seem like the easy way out, but when text messages are free, a content-free message is just asking to be ignored. Tell the girl why you're interested in her, etc.
