After dealing with the Java 1.1/Java 2.0 debacle they appear not to have learned a thing. Do they really think that programmers are stupid enough to think "oh man, it jumped to 5.0, it must be sweet now!" Obviously they are aiming this at the managers and the people that aren't actually writing the code. What is more, the acronyms are J2SE 5.0 and J2EE 5.0. What does the 2 mean now? Normally I'd just laugh at stuff like this and not actually post about it, but I end up disliking any technology that thinks it is so important it needs: 1. a control panel 2. a system tray icon 3. background updating services I like to call it 'foistware' because it just sticks itself into every corner it can to build up brand awareness and name recognition. (Real and QuickTime fall into this category as well.)

In other news, some major parts of Norton Antivirus fit here as well. ("Umm, why does my computer get a blue screen and a memory dump when I just reboot?")

See, it's not Java 5, it's actually Java 1.5.

Java 2.0 is really Java 1.4 and onward (or something to that extent).

I hear it's supposed to be a good bit of an improvement, and it's completely multi platform, so why complain?

Sure, it's not a game programming language, but it does have many more perfectly good uses.

EDIT - And relax, man! It's just a programming language looking for publicity (or the marketers of said language). No big deal, just ignore it if you wish. Don't be so quick to anger, you'll have a stroke. ;P

It's Java 2, not 2.0. The reasoning is that Java 1 and Java 2 are two different manifestations of the Java API. There was a massive reorganization from 1.1 to 1.2, where they changed things to make them more regular, logical, and consistant. They also added Swing and other completely new APIs. For example, the show() and hide() functions for windowing were deprecated and the single function SetVisible() was implemented.

Java 1.2, 1.3, 1.4, and 1.5 all follow the 'Java 2' api set, and Sun wouldn't want to call it 2.0 or 3.0 or 4.0, to avoid confusion with Java 2, 1.2, 1.3, or 1.4.

Sun wanted to avoid version inflation in the first place, which is why they went to 1.2 when 2.0 made more sense. But MS is already pushing ahead with C# 2.0, so Sun has to keep up for marketing purposes.

Too bad adding a 2000 to the end of your product's name will make it seem antiquated nowadays. And 3000 is still a bit ridiculous.

3000 ridiculous, hrm? That's why ATI uses 7000-10000. ;)

I thought Java is a game programming language (as in you can create games with Java/Python)?

Sure you can, but they're not the fastest of games by a long shot.

And it's 7000 to 10000 (althought he 10 has been replaced by an X), IIRC.

Me too! Grean been casserole is the best!

Plus, I really hate RealPlayer, and QuickTime. Any program that bugs me to death about being the default media player, or any program that tries to set itself to be the default media player when you install it, isn't worth shit. RealPlayer and QT are NOT as good as Winamp or VLC. I only have them to view videos in their lame proprietary formats.

Google for quicktime or realplayer codecs. Install the codecs and you can view quicktime/realplayer files in any media player including WMP or Winamp.

J2SE 5 actually used to be called 1.5 until the JavaOne conference (3-4 days ago). For example, the compiler switch to enable the new language features is -source 1.5. Even the site is http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.5.0/download.jsp. It's ridiculous how the marketing department decided to do this on a whim. So now we have the 5th version of the 2nd edition of Java.
