This might be a bit off-topic, but I think a world map with dots representing GDNet members would be very cool.

How about a complete 3d model of the whole world where every GD'ers house has a sim's like diamond above it. Then if someone annoyed you on here you could go put one of there widows out.

And we could all go see Warsong and see if he speaks like he posts :D

So do I, but it seems like something that would be very difficult to implement. There's currently very little control over what people put into their 'From:' fields, so trying to extract usable information from them could be a tough task.

Perhaps if people could enter longitude/latitude information alongside their location fields? (A link to some form of longitude/latitude locator could be included).

I have a different idea.

Let's say you have a set of 50 active users. (We'll only use active users because the infrastructure becomes messy for more than that.) For any given active user, the IP is known, and it's possible to use IP ranges and reverse DNS to determine the approximate location of someone (at least country, maybe state for US). Then, color this information on a map, and you're gold.

Programmers-heaven simply displays a world-map and asks you to click somewhere. Using image maps, it is easy. (No need to input longitude/latitude)

Heh, good idea. Where could you get suitable world maps? I know that quite a few people have made systems for IRC channels or similar with a large map generated using php with points and labels for people.

And coincidently, I just found that grekster lives right near me, I'm in Durham and commute up to Newcastle for school :)

Haha I was down in Durham on Wedensday :) small world :P

We could do the world thing, but it would have to be pretty high resolution otherwise in small countries (like england) the dots would get overcrowded. Suppose you could have a main world map, then when you click on a country it brings up a new page with that coutnries map on which would mean you would get more resolution.
