There's a fair amount of content on the site which can 'update' on a frequent basis. Threads; developer journals; columns; GDS entries; etc. It is reasonable to assume that a user will wish to track developments in a particular 'channel' of content (where a 'channel' is one of the frequently-updating entities I mentioned, like threads and columns). So, how about we drop the bookmarking system, and provide 'content subscriptions' instead? A unified interface for watching threads, columns, news items, GDS entries, journals, and any other channels that we establish in the future. Eventually what we get is almost a personalised start page for each user, with "recent updates" in all their subscribed sections.

See my "Today" page idea, it's basically what you are describing. During the downtime I'm actually thinking of the best way of being able to do this without excuting a large number of queries per page and without hardcoding the channels (it should be possible to drop in new channels to subscribe to without recoding the today page)

Yeah, it should. I don't suppose any of the pre-existing technologies for 'channeled' content, such as RSS/RDF, would be any help?

Integrating it into the RSS feed would be a really nice idea - allowing people to not only feed their 'Today' page with subscribed content, but also to feed their own external sites with it, all through the same system.

While an RSS feed of the database would be nice, that requires external software. It would be a seperate and lower priority feature. I was thinking more toward a personal page whose content (type, position) was customizable (i.e. stick a box with recent AI Forum posts at the top, below that stick recent personal posts that have been responded to, on the left have a bar with new PMs, etc).
