Just wondering the same thing as the last poster. Are you talking about anything in particular that you saw recently?

No, it's just that, it's kind of tough to explain, but I will do my best.

Lets say that you are watching a race, and a runner falls down, and knocks over another runner. Lets say that they both start crying, and they have to be coaxed off the track.

I'd laugh at that. If it were like, a mascot race or something. But say it's the special olympics. It wouldn't be so funny then.

If you guys are mocking the retards over in Beginners, or Help Wanted, then yeah, I can see it's pathetic. But those are sort of the special olympic areas of gamedev.net. We don't go around mocking the special atheletes, do we?

There is a significant distinction between those who are new to a topic and genuinly interested (beginners) and those who don't know anything about a topic yet arrogantly pretend they do, with the desire to use others for thier benifit (my definition of 'noobs'). Personally I have no problem making fun of the latter.

I posted in that thread you mentioned, the 'noob threads' one. I posted my stereotype of the worst kind, someone who has no desire other than to leech information and rely on the efforts of others. These sorts of people, frankly, highly irritate me. Hence having some fun and mocking them.

Posting to say I hate the word noob, especially when spelt n00b.

This is why I rarely play online games these days. People take internet/online games, far too seriously.

Well, I'm a newbie.

I'd like to think I'm not the latter class...the arrogant type who wishes to rely on the efforts of everyone else. I'm studying C++ on my own, with no help from anyone else, and while I do have some hefty dreams (not an MMO, for once!) I'm going to put in my time. If possible, more time than anyone else on the little shaky team we're developing here in Nebraska. ;)

Regardless.

In any online community, there's always a bit of arrogance from the people that have been here longer than anyone else, and they always seem to look down on everyone else. Doesn't matter if it's here, or another forum. It's the same kind of progression you'll see.

In Gamedev.net, I've actually been surprised. Sure, there's a few rude people, but for the most part, all the people here are willing to help each other out. (granted, all the discussions FLY right over my head, but again...newbie...:) )

So all I really, really, REALLY have to say, is just try to respect each other. I'm sure some of you experienced folks started out as an arrogant punk who wanted to make teh ub3r mmo. And if you didn't, you were still clueless. ;)

We all start from the same inexperienced beginnings.

I think that any culture has their own version of 'noobs', regardless of it is about game development, car audio, or underwater skydiving. There will always be those who are stereotypes, and in many cases one of these stereotypes is the 'person who thinks they know everything, but are actually quite clueless' category. On this site it's typically individuals who want to make MMORPG's without any prior experience. On car audio sites, it’s typically those who say they just purchased four 15 inch Boss subs and complain about having to now buy an amp to run them off. In both cases, they are a stereotype that everyone recognises.

The problem I think is not that these stereotypes get picked on (because by definition, the category itself is supposed to be something that you don’t want to be (i.e. noob = clueless while high and mighty at the same time, not to be confused with a newbie who is simply just someone starting out)), but because that single stereotype gets done to death. I know myself I get sick of seeing the classic 'foreigner who can’t get laid' template rehashed over and over again in sitcoms and films. As PnP Bios says, "The joke is dead, let this horse die".

I found myself that I began using this stereotype too often as way to make comics, but now I try and stay as far away from it as possible, just because it's been done to death. The latest comic me and Carlos did is probably as close to the 'har har, noob' jokes as I will go, and if I do try to make sure it is done in a way it hasn't been done before. I actually made a comic a little while ago fell into this trap, even though I was trying to avoid it. The person I sent the comic to for feedback on was right in pointing out that I was just bashing mmorpg noobs again, even if I was trying to avoid it.

The problem is not just here though. On the car audio forum I visit, a lot of the moderators have gotten real sick of anyone getting bashed who mentions they bought Boss gear (Boss gear is stereotypically known to be the worst stuff you can buy, but is bought by many people simply because they look awesome), and the typical jokes like 'har har, where does my Boss amp keep it’s cd player lol' that are repeated 100x every day.

Instead of picking on noobs, we need to stop being so lazy and think use other stereotypes for our amusement. Greedy corporations, slave driving employers, hack/rip-off game companies. I’m not saying we should suddenly actively bashing these people outright, but instead that there are a lot of other worse things than MMORPG creating noobs out there. Lets try and get original.

Boy, he's right. I posted in that N00b threads and I'll admit, I'm not a "What language should I learn, SDL or OpenGL?" kind of n00b, but I'm really newbie. Just yesterday I had to skim over my C++ book because I forgot the do loop. But lets get real, picking on the "runt" of the pack is something even animals do, and believe it or not, humans are animals to. So even though were not biting or fighting one another for how much food we get to eat (though we kinda do in a sense) picking on the "beginners" is something that just happens. I'm not saying that there is no point in trying to get rid of it, I'm all for that but, all we can do is prevent it, not stop it.

I'm also in the "make fun of the 'latter' n00bs" party. I've seen a lot on #graphicsdev that use the other guys as a crutch basically and thinking they know some stuff about graphics when in reality they don't. (for the #graphdev regulars: Ahmed, Wildfire and Thoys come immediately to mind) They are frustrating, and I have poked fun about them behind their back because they are stupid. Not ineducated, I mean truly are idiotic and have little desire or indication of selfmotivation to learn the stuff themselves most of the time.

THOSE are the n00bs I make fun of, because they're hopeless anyways.

I'd like to take this opportunity to complain about whatever pretentious fuck decided that it's clever to have an anchor as a punchline. Example.

If a person at the special olimpics would arrogantly say to the press, that he could take on the BEST from the real olimpics while rolling uphill in a wheelchair, actually believing this, and cursing at everyone who is telling him that he is out of his league, i would laugh.

(actually i would feel sorry for him because, he cannot achieve that due to his physical disabilities. But if noobs put their asses down and read some of the topics here and first try figure out the answers to their questins on their own, they could theoretically achieve "grateness". Sitting at home and wanting to make an mmorpg in 2 weeks doesnt do that)

Wait, wait, wait... If we don't make fun of noobs then how in the name of all that's good and holy are we supposed to preserve the pecking order in our little online clan? You can't just trust the ratings for that.
