I have been having a lot of fun with my Linksys WRT54G lately, as it has not been letting me connect to the Internet at all. The problem started a week ago when our Comcast-supplied cable modem began to go into diagnostic mode(what it does when you start it up) roughly every ten minutes. Thinking the modem was our problem, we bought a Motorola Surfboard cable modem from radioshack. THe modem really helped our connection speed. I hooked it up directly to our computer, bypassing the router, and I was getting speeds of around 6 MBPS. When I tried it in our WRT54G v. 3, I could not connect to the Internet. I can ping the router, but cannot ping any websites. This morning, when I power cycled the router, and then reset it, I could connect through the router. But when I changed the settings, I couldn't connect. Resetting it again, it failed when I would change any setting. Does anybody know how to fix this, or is it time to buy a new router? Linksys' website wasn;t much help, a support forum wouldn't let me register, so now I have come here looking for help. Thanks for any replies

Were your connection problems from a wireless client going over the router, or from a system physically plugged in to the switch? I had a WRT54G that would do something very similar (wireless connection would establish, decent signal, no traffic passing at all) - reflashing the ROM on it seemed to help for a while but never ultimately cured the problem. I replaced it with a DLink and have been fine ever since, but that's a bit of an extreme "solution."

It's possible that it's just a firmware failure and the hardware is fine, but it's hard to know for sure. If reflashing the firmware doesn't help, you probably have a dead box (or a dead wireless card in your client - if this is a wireless issue, make sure you try other clients before you write off the router).

It doesn't even work from my physical connection, so I am going to try reloading the firmware. And assumning that doesn't work, my dad is buying any nbew hardware, not me, so I might be back in a second looking for WAP recommendations.

Recently I had a Linksys 802.11B wireless router fail. The WAN port had gone bad and seemed to have taken out the ethernet port on the cable modem as well. Perhaps it happened to you too?

A firmware upgrade seemed to work, thanks for all the help. Its working for now, hopefully for a while.

I have a wrt54g sitting on my floor right now. I flashed it with satori a few months back when I was madhaxx0ring (stealing internet) and now it doesn't even turn on. :(

I'm pretty sure its a physical problem though
