Question for those who live in the Austin area:

I'm attending the Austin Game Conference, and driving myself down there. Since I'll have a car, it will be possible to scrimp on hotel costs by staying a few miles outside of downtown. Is there public (free or otherwise) parking available in downtown Austin? Which doesn't require frequent trips to refill the meter? Alteratively, does the public transit system reach five miles up I-35/80? Thanks.

Yeah, there's parking garages all over downtown Austin, but I'm not sure how much they charge per hour. You can check the bus route from your hotel to downtown from here, otherwise you can get a cab anywhere in town.

If your going to be in downtown, you should go bar hopping that night on 6th street and catch a cab back to the hotel.

hmmn... you may be able to park at Zilker Park but I'm not too sure if they close the parkinglot in the evenings. You could get to downtown easily from there and its a great place to hang out. Other than that, you could park on one of the side streets off of South Congress and catch a bus. I used to live right on S. Congress and it was really convienient.

Thanks alot guys! Your input is greatly appreciated... your local tourist bureau doesn't have any information on parking other than "yes, we have that".
