It just came out today. When the original iPod debuted, the only reason there was a lot of content was because people were already extensively using MP3s. Also, it's not like the video iPod doesn't play music...

Anyway, you can purchase episodes of ABC television shows the day after they air. If that proves successful, you'll probably see every television network and cable channel eventually enter some form of agreement with Apple to place their content on iTAMS - speaking of which, will they have to change the name to de-emphasize "Music"? iTunes Apple Store? iTunes Apple Multimedia Store?

Whoa is Apple moving fast!! Just about a month ago they released the Nano. And just today I found out about their Video Ipod. Im afraid to upgrade my Ipod in fear that a new one will come out 2 weeks later [lol]. However, I am still a big fan of Apple. HORAAY FOR IPODS!!


OMG!! They made an ITunes 6!! I just updated to ITunes 5 yesterday!

I'm just surprised that they move product out that fast. I mean I just got the Nano and now that came out. iTunes is getting upgraded all the time now. Plus their hardware systems are getting better specs all the time. I think this might make some people upset if they just bought a product a few months ago. I also heard that there are only 2 iPods now. The Nano and the Video one. I guess the older models aren't going to be offered anymore like the iPod mini.

Oh boy! Another iPod! I'm going to have to spend another $300 to stay cool! This is awesome! Oh, also, I am going to have to shovel out another $1500 tommorow for the new iBook, then next week, I'm going to have to get the latest version of OS X, theres another $300. I just looovveeee too see them move this fast!

Innovative? You wish. They are waayyyy behind iRiver and Creative with the whole PMP (portable media player). But, the new iPod is smaller, and cheaper than Creative and iRivers PMP's. The screen is way to small though, I don't think the iPod is meant to be a PMP, and should stay an MP3 player.

Apple's iPod products are neither "new", nor particularly innovative. Small portable media players supporting video have been out for more than a year now; Apple is behind.

They do have a strong marketing department however.

Hmmm.... Im just not used to a company churning out products this fast. Apple is probably the first company I've seen that upgrades their product base so fast. I love Apple for it's efforts to make technology simple and shall I say, sexy[cool].

We need more Apple and Linux stuff in this world, the only reason I am sticking with Windows is cause of the HUGE array of Apps that require Windows. If this base was to switch to Apple, I will totally dump the whole Microsoft franchise.

Somehow I think if Apple was to become the number one company it would probably fall into the same line as Microsoft is now. And then everybody would be pining for the "old days" when Microsoft was so cool.

No, we don't.

We need more platform agnostic stuff. We need more open standards. We need more interoperable technologies. We need more compatible formats. We need an IT ecosystem that allows you to select equipment and software on the basis of how it addresses your needs, without locking you in and preventing you from seamlessly cooperating with others with different setups.

Ironically, Microsoft is the big company taking steps in this direction. The .NET CLR, XAML, Office 12 XML formats, adopting open standards, becoming friendly toward open source - and releasing some of their own software as open source... I think their strategy is to provide the best experience simply by providing the best software, but to allow your content and applications (eventually) migrate freely.

Apple does some very good things, and some very bad and annoying things. The OS X website, for instance, claims that you can seamlessly add an OS X machine to a Windows domain and share and consume file and print resources. This is half true. You can, but you first have to disable encrypted SMB connections on the server, something Apple carefully omits to mention.

Either way, I think that consumers are becoming sophisticated and inherently technical enough that lock-in and lock-out are no longer viable long-term growth strategies for IT vendors, which is a Good Thing™. Ultimately, we shouldn't need to care about "Apple stuff" or "Windows stuff"; we should only care about our stuff.

Completely boring. And over hyped. Just like every god damn thing Apple does. At least Google usually deserves the praise.

Basically, Apple's innovation is that they're going to link it into the iTunes store, and sell...well, probably music videos. No particular innovation in hardware, although they're getting credit for breaking ground anyway.

I think it'd be pretty neat if you could subscribe to a season of shows for a discounted price instead of paying however much per episode.

I checked on the Apple website and it doesn't say anything, but what video formats can you load onto the iPod, just purchased ones?

I dont know, but a TV Tuner + any PMP would be awesome. I almost had a Creative Zen PMP, but... I had to get rid of it(my parents weren't happy with my grades).

I just tried iTunes 6 and it lets you load mp4 and mov videos, so anything besides purchased stuff you'd have to convert to .mov.

Now it's time to see if iTunes 6 works with my iPod (iTunes 5 for Windows doesn't).

Well you have to give Apple credit, they did a swell job in "reinventing the wheel" and making it a sought after icon.

After sitting at my computer and thinking for 38 seconds, it dawned on me that what makes Apple so famous:

* marketing

* heavy use of the color white & silver (research shows that these colors, when applied, increase the chance of the viewer to feel more at ease and less visually stressed toward the compostion of the object)

* Microsoft's diminishing reputation



Even after thinking about all this, I am still quite attracted to Apple. Why?? Because I love their Ipods and mac's!! My cute little Ipod mini outbeats all those black, bulky, buttony mp3 players out there. ooh raah [lol]

Apple has proven quite adept at bundling. Sure, PCs have had cameras for years. But they came separate. End users [who, I suspect we can all agree, are idiots] not only have to buy the camera, they have to figure out how to make it work.

Apple is building them right into the laptop. Turn it on, and go.

It really doesn't matter if they're the first...they make it easy, and they make people want to do it. Which makes them successful.

Overhyped by whom? A guy who's excited about it on a message board? Your suggestion is for Apple to stop moving forward, or what? You sound like someone who spells Microsoft with a dollar sign.

I like that you can purchase TV shows soon after they air, and I'm looking forward to having more of a selection in the future, but right now it's a bit immature (which is understandable for the moment, until the waters have been tested). Obviously a broader selection will come with time, but I hope they add video content that's not specifically tailored for viewing on an iPod. At the moment the video content is meant to be played specifically on the iPod's tiny screen, I guess, because I think the TV episodes are only available in its (very low) screen resolution. I'd be interested in higher resolution TV shows / movies, though I s'pose they'd probably have to transfer via some peer-to-peer solution for bandwith cost reasons.

The black iPod nano is outselling the white. Customizing Apple hardware products by painting them colors other than white is a brisk, booming business.

That said, Apple has stunning industrial design.
