I got an Amazon.com gift card for Christmas, and I'm trying to find a book that will give me a good general idea on how to structure game programs. I'm not fantastic with OpenGL, but I'm good enough that I don't have to have a book with specific info on basic graphics programming. I'm thinking more along the lines of scene management, character management, timing, maybe a little on modeling & animation, etc... and of course, info on things like networking and sound are nice, but not needed. Does anyone know of any good books? [Edited by - Sloner on December 25, 2005 12:34:06 PM]

I'd definitely look into the Game Programming Gems series.

There are about 6 of them out right now I think.

Personally, I like OpenGL Game Development by Seddon. It's a good, quick overview of all of the basic components of an editor/engine combo. It's not the best code and there are several errors in the code. What you have at the end is rather crude and it isn't ready for you to release and call your own. Rather it's here's the bare minimum and if you want something to release maybe spend a few weeks working on each of these components rather than a day or a few hours. It does lack any form of animation as well as collision detection.

Eberly has also put out a book on engine design recently. Good read, goes into a decent amount of depth.

I'll second that, I haven't purchased it myself just yet do to my limited funds at the moment, but I spent a lot of time in the DigiPen library reading through it. It goes into things at a pretty good depth withought being difficult to understand. Sounds like what you're looking for.

I might have misread what level of book you were looking for. My first suggestion was more if you needed to warm up for a book such as Eberly's. A textbook approach to game engine design can be a bit overwhelming for someone starting out.
