Blitz drops NFL license and adds volience

I've never been a huge fan of sports games; except maybe some of the old NES hockey. But this game looks like it could be quite fun. From the Article: "In a gritty new video game about a fictional football league, players cripple their opponents, gamble and use performance-enhancing supplements.". Was wondering what other people think of this. Is it a bastardization of football or a clever way to enhance gameplay? Does dropping the license and losing all the real teams and players hurt? I like it. Blitz has always been a quality product, I could see them being able to pull this off.

You're forgetting a key element. EA has the rights to the NFL, so Midway couldn't use the license anymore. They returned to a more arcade-y form of football that was seen in earlier blitz's. They needed some other stuff to stand out against a "real" football game, so the violence and general political correctness is added in. Honestly, the game is quite good.

I was under the impression this new Blitz game was related to the "Playmakers" series on HBO. Perhaps the deal fell through.

But yes, if you're ever watched the Playmakers show you likely won't be surprised by this game at all. Drug use, sex, violence -- good old American football, eh?

I remember playing a hockey game at a friends house once. I don't remember what game it was, or even what system it was, but it was focused around trying to kill the other team as much as trying to score.

Most fun I ever had with a sports game. Blitz going in the same direction should work well.

There was also a Mutant League Football. It was awesome, EA really should do a remake.

I used to win every game by running back and forth between bases, killing enough of the other team so they had to forfeit :)

I foundly remember Grand Monster Slam from 1989, a somewhat senseless game but fun nevertheless. The ball was a big furry eyeball with wings with it's own mind, and the players in the game were all messed up in different ways.
I even found the manual online. Oh, the memories!

There was also a similar [American] football game. It was awesome. Hopefully, the EA deal will make realistic sports games less enticing, allowing such games to be made again in the future.

Coming from Australia and growing up with Rugby Leauge, I have the impression that NFL players are a bunch of overpaid panzies who can't tackle for nuts. But, I do enjoy NFL in some ways (mainly when they stop talking about how hardcore they think they are), and the game looks like it could still be quite cool.

Your rugby players don't weigh 300+ pounds. The way the game is played dictates the way the players are padded.

Assuming I got the conversions correct, most are around 220 pounds or so, with the bigger ones getting up near 260-270 pounds. Not that big of a difference considering its body hitting body rather than padding hitting padding. Also, Ruby League players tend to have very little body fat, as compared to the pure stopping walls of weight that NFL tends to have. This means that the hits are at much higher speeds rather than the slower moving 300+ pound players the NFL has.
