Spore looks amazing

Also, I enjoyed SimEarth when I was younger and resent that comment [grin]
I am 12:30 into the movie, and it's pretty amazing so far. The movie has just gotten to the sentient phase.

I actually liked SimEarth - and I played a fair bit of it when I was a kid. However as much as I tried, I didn't think it was all that fun.
I did like the comic - the audience members pretty much epitomized how I felt after watching the video. While I never understood the hype about spore, after watching that video i'm now ready to drink the kool aid. [wink]

It is an iteresting concept, but I'm still not sure what will make it enjoyable and fun. As pointed out by other posters: What's going to make this enjoyable and not another SimEarth?
OT:
remember the copy protection for simearth? "what's the third word in the second line on page 48 of the manual?"
and sentient cetaceans!

The video is pretty amazing. The graphics and procedural animation of the units you create look very cool indeed. But, i'm just a little worried that it kind of looks a bit boring after a while, that you could be doing the same things over and over again.
I like the fact that you can edit your own buildings and create your own style. I also like that CareBear example for the creature you can make.

Same here. From a technology point of view, it's farking amazing, but the actual game itself seems a tad boring and pointless.

So Sims fans will love it then? [grin]
Damnit, I started watching that and missed American Dad completely.
And I blame you.
I think it looks amazing too - but I've only ever played SimTower

I must buy this game after watching that. I've never heard of it before but I think it would be amazing to populate a planet then cause chaos on others etc and be able to swap elements/styles frequently.
This game doesn't sound any more pointless than any other game.
"Oh no, the bad guys are comming! Quick, jump over them! There you go, now land on them and pick their shell up and use it as a weapon against other bad guys!" Does that sound like fun?
"Shit, they're comming, quick, build build a bunch of those little dudes that headbut them like mad!"
"So, let me get this straight. I use the mouse and keyboard to change the view I see, and click when my view is close looking like this, and if the other players do it before me I have to sit and wait like 2 minutes for them to finish? Oh, and players on my team are going to blind me?!?"
When you get right down to it, most games are really pointless and shitty. This game does look like fun to play around with. Looks like a TOY, rather than a job as some games (MMO anyone?) try to be.

That's right; it is more of a toy than a game. Games typically have objectives, levels, and a start middle and end to the gaming experience. As he states in the video though, the entire game is pretty much one big sandbox mode. When that happens, it’s no longer a game as such, it's a toy. ElectroPlankton is similar to this, where there is no 'when this happens you win the game', it's just a fun thing to experiment with. Problem is those games normally work because they are taken in such small doses. This game is so long, it may just have a lot of people thinking ‘meh, who cares’.
I think that it could work to the extent where everyone plays the game to see what kinds of crazy creatures they can get at the end, and the forums fill up with 'post your race' threads around the net. The sandbox mode in the game 'The Movies' is very popular, but it has a point and goal to it, and when the player spends 50+ hours playing it, they have something awesome to show off on the forums. I just hope this game has that same aspect to it.

That's the coolest fucking thing I have ever seen!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Think of it as a "Hardcore Tamagotchi" ;)
I hope it won't turn out to be as boring as the Sims (sry for the Sims fans... I just can't stand this virtual puppet world :) )

Spore does look good.
If you're interested the original video from the 05 GDC can be found here
http://www.pqhp.com/cmp/gdctv/
Its 60 minutes long where as the google video is only 35 minutes, not sure if its missing anything important. Looks like they edited out all the asides Wright made, which were quite funny and may explain a bit more background to the game, instead of just how it looks/works.
There are a large number of video's on site now, many of them worth watching in my opinion. Although proberbly nothing quite as impressive as Spore.

My biggest fear with Spore is that it will turn out just like Black and White. They hyped you this awesome concept of evolution then it turned out to be a less-then-average RTS with one big creature.
I get the impression with that video that it is your typical publicity stunt, i mean especially considering that bear creature that they made. They're trying make it look completely evolutional. I also reckon that even if the precedural-ness of it all is good, you will still be doing roughly the same evolutionary process each time you play it.
I think that it will follow in the path of the sims but the next generation better, in that you will play it once for novelty and then realise that building a new house and making a big group of friends again is boring.
I won't buy it.

Yeah, it looks amazing and I can't wait to buy it. It seems to me that any boredom will be thrown out by the diversity of the play modes. I don't know how long it will take to advance to the different stages, but it seems like there would be enough variety along the way to keep it interesting.
My favorite part of sim earth is the installer.
