Old as hell, obviously, but I tihnk this is a great speech, and is a nice retrospective on what the feelings were in that time:

Well, we had a thread about this before, but IIRC it was only text. This is the first time I've seen the video posted.

I wish everyone on 9/11 had gotten it off their chest and began moving on like Jon Stewart said the show was going to. Instead, now almost 5 years later, people still live in fear. They still live like time was stuck on 9/11.

It's time to begin moving on - for everyone's sake. For our safety - mental, and physical. For our lives. We can not become great if we live forever on the worst day of our lives.

It's time for Bush/Rove/Cheney/Rice and FoxNews to stop using it as a crutch, a catch all excuse for justifying the shredding of the constitution, the geneva conventions, the united nations and abolishing estate taxes...

PS - Boy am I glad I didn't own a television back then...

Let them use it for a crutch all they want, people need to get smarter and see through it.

why is collapse of two buildings still such a big deal to the US 5 years after? it's just two buildings...(ok, maybe with some part of that pentagon...)

now in comparison:

going to iraq, attacking a country, over something that doesn't exist (wmd) against the wish of UN, destroying lives of thousands of innocents there...with the country still in turmoil in huge parts of it...now that's a big deal...

lolz...

Man jumping to his death after having no other choice.

Commercial airliner filled with people being slammed into a building.

That's why, you fuck.

Who the hell gave you authority to point out what IS and what IS NOT a big deal?

Also, you are basically stating that no one in America cares for anyone outside of America...who the hell do you think you are? I doubt you can speak on behalf of everyone of the United States, (or at least I hope you wouldn't) especially considering the nature of your...well, you're an idiot. It is one thing to blame a government based upon its actions and its another thing to blame its people, in entirety. You can make the argument that American politics and the American people are intertwined but that doesn't make that rationalization a competent one.

2,749 dead from September 11th...plus numerous others who are in the process of dying from inhalation of crushed building materials as a result of volunteering... This event has since affected millions of lives.

Should we not care about this?

Anyways, although it is clear that you think everyone in America is a barbarian, I think its safe to say that people care a whole helluva lot less about the buildings themselves and more about the people that were inside the buildings when they collapsed.

What the hell man? This isn't some sort of contest as to which situation is worse. Yes, Iraq is a horrible situation too but why the hell are you trying to discredit 9/11 as being just "a few buildings falling down." People fucking died. People died in Iraq, people died in 9/11 - don't go shitting into people's faces just because one situation isn't up to par with what you call "a big deal." War, death and destruction on any level is a big deal.

Don't you even try to refute what I just said unless you want to appear to be the biggest asshole ever.

I'd rip on nomad a bit too, but you guys already took care of that it seems.

I hate nomad and everything he says, so don't take this as support for him.

It only affected millions of lives because people let it. It should have affected 2749 people and their families/friends, no more.

It's a pity people let it be such a success.

It was a big deal. A very big deal. It has little to do with success...humans are highly reactionary and perhaps don't stop to consider if their reaction will in some way cause a smile to crease the face of a terrorist.

I say that millions were affected with many different perspectives in mind: from that of the national confidence, to that of economic confidence, to that of emotional ruin, psychological stress and everything in between...this is much more complex than considering ONLY the welfare of the family members of the victims although of course the extent of their loss was far greater...However, the entire nation, for a few hours, was thrown into a paroxysm of horror and despair and I don't care who you were and if you pretended to show it or not, everyone was affected by it in some way (and not for the better). The shockwaves of the day will continue to resonate and be felt on every level of this nation's structure; it is inevitable.

No man is an island: I would be more disturbed, not less, if exactly 2,749 people and their families and friends were affected. Empathy is an integral part of humanity.

did i say not to care? lolz silly boy...

millions died in other "true" wars in other countries...who among you _really_ cared for them?

come on now...the only reason you really "cared" is because of the near possibility that hey, maybe this is the start of something larger, of a larger war...and i might be affected...

...and if something is happening remotely to you guys, you don't care anymore...now tell me, do you really "care" for these people? no, you just feel "oh shit what's happening" because it's happening near to you...

you are mixing up "care" with "fear"...

i don't like people dying or being killed either, who does? psh...

Between Stewart and Letterman, I was going to break. That was heartfelt and brought back alot of memories. Letterman said something that struck me. I'm paraphrasing slash quoting (forgive me for unpreciseness) "They say these groups of men did this because of religious fervor. Religious fervor. What god damn sense does that make?" I wonder if people still think that fully or understand that foreign policy and fear of culture decimation is what motivated these men to do what they did. Does anyone (media, politicians, think tanks, PEOPLE) even consider that in their formulations and opinions of ME policy and strategy?
