For centuries, the act of cannibalism has been considered taboo by most of the world's societies. There are a number of reasons why we shouldn't eat our own species, including the over-arching murder taboo, but I think if it were controlled properly it could actually work.
  • The cheapest and most abundant source of L-cysteine, an amino acid used by the human body for sulfur production, is human hair itself. This doesn't even require the killing of people, you just shave everyone every week and recycle the trimmings into your diet.
  • Every year, millions of people die from causes other than disease. We use thousands of acres of farm land for growing cattle for meat, and then throw away tons and tons of protein matter by burying it in the ground. By adopting cannibalism, we will significantly supplement our food-protein sources. This could benefit developing nations greatly, as cattle are usually much more difficult to raise than humans.
  • It is generally considered taboo to destroy a cemetary. If all cemetaries are properly cared for, then eventually our land will be completely taken over by cemetaries. This may have already happened in Central Pennsylvania. By adopting cannibalism, we will reduce the need for cemetaries and crematoriums.
  • If cannibalism weren't a taboo, then expiditionary teams that get lost in the mountains of Tibet (for example) won't come back psychologically troubled if they have to eat their dead comrades for survival. It's bad enough that they got lost in the mountains in the first place, having to endure the cold, unforgiving weather, and having to watch their friends die. Must their friends' deaths be in vain, as well?
Of course, cannabilism isn't without its detractions.
  • The transmissible spongiform encephalopathy known as Kuru (very similar to Mad Cow Disease), can spread very quickly in cannabilist societies, but is almost completely unheard of in non-cannabilist societies.
  • Certain body parts are extremely unhealthy to ingest, such as the liver. Proper preperation care will be necessary.
  • If the identity of the once-living human flesh is known to the consumer, it's likely to cause sever psychological problems. I don't know this for fact, but I know it would really freak me out.
  • There is a chance that a black market could emerge. Men could be roaming the streets, murdering homeless people for the meat markets. Of course, depending on your view of homeless people, this might belong in the other list.
I think, with proper levels of control and regulation, as we do with every food industry, left-over human flesh of victims of accidents and old age could prove very profitable and beneficial.

You either believe that within your society more individuals are good than evil, and that by protecting the freedom of individuals within that society you will end up with a society that is as fair as possible, or you believe that within your society more individuals are evil than good, and that by limiting the freedom of individuals within that society you will end up with a society that is as fair as possible.

would that be the point-of-death or point-of-processing? You could get hit by a bus crossing Market and 2nd, but I doubt the supermarket will care for that level of specificity.

    This is a weird thread.

For your system, in order to eat someone I'd assume you'd need to get their permission first. Not a whole lot of people donate their bodies to medical science or wherever upon their deaths as is. How many would let other people eat them?

Did I mention this is a weird thread?

I imagine you'd have to have some sort of authorization otherwise the religious fanatics would throw a fit. Actually they would probably throw a fit anyway. Make it compulsory and then we can harvest the organs for transplants too.

Even if cannibalism wasn't a taboo, that wouldn't make it any less psychologically traumatizing.

Not right away. Give people a few generations to get used to the idea. Give it enough time and people would be upset that they couldn't eat Grandpa Willy after he passed on.

Cannibalism is socially acceptable to a certain extent. People eat placentas all the time. Maybe we can use that justify cannibalism on every part of human flesh.

I seem to recall some amazonian culture that eats their dead out of respect, meaning people could probably get used to it. Not that I'd want to do it, but YMMV.

p.s.: What does human meat taste like?

Why is my body producing sulphur? For kicks?

I'm pretty sure an aversion to cannibalism is most likely an evolutionary response to not eating diseased hu-mans (see: Kuru, as you mentioned).

    Thats only technically cannibalisem.
I believe industrial cannibalisem didnt exists in our world.
There were no meat products , such as suasage, for sale.
When I talked about cannibalisem in the other thread, I ment like it was done not long ago by cannibal tribes.
That is, killing someone alive for his meat and not eating a corpse of someone who died of a heart attack.
Consider this, what do you think about that a mother will be allowed to eat her own baby if he is no older then a month.
When they are less then a month they are anyway not too aware of themself, and its the mother who will need to take care of her baby for the next 18 years?
Some animal mothers eat their own offspring, so its not something unnatural.
    What do you think?
