DVI / VGA

The parts I have just bought for my new PC include a dual-monitor supporting GeForce 7600GT with 2 DVI ports (no VGA), and a 19" Samsung monitor which appears to only support a VGA interface. In other words, there's no way of plugging my new monitor into my new PC. This should have been the first thing I checked but somehow it eluded me [smile]. I've found the necessary adapter to solve this problem (DVI male to VGA female) but I was just curious to know what the difference in image quality is between the two. Thanks!

You'll notice (or rather, I do) a 'warmer' picture for the DVI, as opposed to the 'cool' picture of the VGA. Meaning: there will be a (very slight) tint-shade of red/orange on the DVI monitor.

It's small, very small, but visible. By no means is it 'bad' (and I'm anal about things like dead pixels etc), but it is different.

I'm not sure how universal this is, but with my nvidia cards and using the dvi interfaces, I've been able to do some screen scaling things. Like if I'm running below the native resolution, it will do the "widescreen effect" and add the black bars to the appropriate places on the screen so that actual image is still running at the native resolution (eg doing 1024x768 but keeping the actual resolution at 1280x1024)

Okay, thanks for the info. it doesn't sound like I'm loosing much by having to convert from DVI to VGA.

dvi is only noticably better at very high resolutions, but even then the difference is very slight.
and don't worry, all graphics cards (except for used items) should come with an adapter of thier own.

Using VGA, my LCD looked great.

When I switched to DVI, it looked a bit better.

Either way, you won't be disappointed.
