Speakers echo, but headphones don't

I've got a little problem here. I've got a set of Creative speakers. Nothing fancy, just two speakers. My computer has an on-board audio card (not sure exactly which one, butI've got a Pentium 4), but I have the latest drivers for it. It uses a C Media '97 codec. Using Windows XP SP2. The problem is that all sounds echo a little bit. It's not terrible, except that it makes any speach very difficult to understand. It hasn't always been like this, but I can't identify when it changed (which was at least a month and a half ago). My microphone is muted, so it's not that. I've gone into the CMI Audio Config program and made sure that it wasn't using any environment like "cave" or some equally useless setting (it's on generic which is the only sensible sounding option). The part that has most confused me is that when I plug in my headphones, the echo goes away. Any suggestions?

Another set of speakers (Cambrige Soundworks, now, also 2 speakers) echoes also. The headphones are USB while the speakers are both those other plugs, not sure what they're called. You know, the standard headphone/speaker plugs.

The usb earphones of course aren't using the soundcard.

I would recheck audio configuration over again and try turning cave echo on/off , sometimes there may be a bug.
Also, check if there's echo if one is off. Check if there's echo using capture.
I don't think speakers that connects to normal audio jack can ever do reverb.

Make sure it's not a microphone picking up the reflection of your speakers' sound off the wall behind you.

[edit] I guess I didn't read your message carefully enough where you said you already checked that.

Well, I think I've fixed it. The pull-down menu of options that you can select had a button over it titled "More option". It would become highlighted (as if I had pressed it) when I select one of the environment types (including generic), but would become unhighlighted if I selected from one of these other environments that were for some reason not in the pull-down, but instead each on seperate buttons. I assumed that it was better to have it pressed since that would make it use the selected environment (generic, which sounded better than "bath room", "auditormium", or "rock hall"). However, if you unselect that button while not selecting any environment, the echo seems to go away.

Don't you hate it how you always end up solving it shortly after you ask after working on it for months? Anyhow, thanks guys.
