Ok. I was able to figure this one out, but it took me like 15 minutes. I've been pulling these out of a general aptitude testing book. To help my wife with her studying. A boy bought some marbles for 36 cents. He lost three of them and sold the 1/3 of the reminder at cost for 9 cents. How many marbles did he buy originally? If you get this would you have consider it an easy question to answer? btw if you want the answer I will post it up later.

x = amount of marbles
p = price of a marble
xp = 36
(x-3)/3*p = 9
xp-3p = 27
-xp = -36
-3p = -9
p=3
3x=36
x = 12
Assuming that he sold at the same price per marble that he bought for, he bought 12 marbles for 36 cents and sold 3 for 9 cents. I'd consider this a fairly easy question; it's just solving a system of equations. Though without some additional assumption it's impossible. I could buy 12000 marbles for 36 cents lose three and sell 3999 for 9 cents, but I'd be doing it at a loss.

huh?

I must have done something wrong.

x - 3 = 36

x = 36 + 3

x = 39

he lost three of them and sold 1/3 of the reminder

1/3*(x - 3)

1/3*(39 - 3)

1/3*36

12

I clearly do not know what I'm doing here.

Alrecenk,
I took your answer to my wife and she explain it too me. She says thanks btw.

She understand how you got the answer, but she is having a hard time getting the answer her self.

I use to think I knew what I was doing, now I'm not so sure.

You're mistaking the 36 cents as the number of marbles he starts with before he loses the 3.
