sending a fax by computer

A service that I regularly use is eFax.com. They let you send and receive faxes from anywhere you receive email.

You'd need a service (like mentioned) that you send a file to, and if the service understands the file, faxes it, for a fee.

The more direct route is to connect your modem to your telephone line, then use the built in faxing feature in Windows (on Windows XP you need to install it from the CD using Add/Remove programs->Windows Components, on old versions like 95 it was assumed everyone was using a modem so its often right on the right click menu).

I really do need to poke around Windows a bit more than just for gaming when not on my Mac. Thanks for the heads up on the rather neat feature Michalson!

Here's another tip - many MS applications let you send a fax through the print dialog. For example, say you want to fax a Word doc. Open the doc in Word, select print from the file menu, change the printer to Fax and hit ok. It should pull up additional dialogs prompting you for fax numbers, cover sheets and the like before actually performing the dial out.

Darn, I don't have a regular phone line, only a cell phone. I only have one paper I need to fax, maybe it would be simplest just to send it from a copy shop while I'm running errands tomorrow. But thank you all for the helpful explanations. [smile]

It is, in theory, possible to send a fax using your cellphone and a computer. However:

- Your phone might not support it.
- If your phone does, your carrier might not support it.
- If your carrier supports it, you're probably not allowed to use it unless you pay them 15$ more per month.

Faxes are so '90s. I wish people would learn to use email. [smile]
