Well me and my friend like to make games on our freetime. Sometimes as a team, sometimes solo. Our problem (like most of you) is finding the motovation to finish a project. We were thinking "What if we only had 6 hours to make a great game, no matter how simple, could we finish it?" We decided prehaps we should make it a competition between the two of us, to further the motovation. Then we figured, what if there were others that had the same problems as us and all it would take is a quick 6 hour competion to get their creative bloods flooing? We don't have a set date yet (that's why we're here, to get your opinions) however it will definatly be around a week from now at the very latest. The rule is you can use anything you want to make this (C, flash... ya even Klik'n'Play) and any past tools you may have made, but the game must be an original one. Started at the beggining of the six hours... we'll use the honour system. What we want is some of your ideas here. What day is good for you? How should we do sign ups? basically post away (we'll be here alot) and in a few days when we are all happy with the conditions and date will shall start. Ask Away.

Wow, that sounds interesting. Does everything have to be from scratch, or if you invented this nifty engine, could you use that?

Sounds like a good idea. If I am available when you start I might try it, but I can't guarantee I'll finish in time, or even come-up with a good idea. (Are we allowed to brainstorm in advance?) Not the first time this has happened, although usually people give themselves a week, or so.

These two articles might prove useful/inspiring.

The GD Gathering Seattle group did something like this not long ago, only it was 24 hours instead of 6. We even used these forums as a kind of journal to track our progress (see this thread). It was quit fun. I don't know how easy it would be to organize and host something like this over the internet, but good luck. Its a great way to get yourself to do some work.

Hey.

You can brain storm all you want. You can make as many psudo code diagrams's as you want. You can use tools you've made before (y hallo thar level editor). Yu just can't sit down on your computer and start gameplay testing/enemy making/tile placing, ect until the competition starts.

Before we make any lists of competitors or anything lets decide on a date. We're fairly open here, but we were going for after christams, but before the following weekend (for our of age fellow coders).

How's Thursday sound to every one?

Thursday won't work for me, but could you possibly make this a monthly thing, or something like that? That would be cool. Don't not do it just because of me.

We'll see how this one does, maybe make it a monthly/biweekly thing. There at least me and my friend in, so theres two competitors, as long as people participate I don't see why we couldn't make it mothly.

BTW Would another day around Thrusday be better for you, or are you rather busy that week?

Well, this being Christmas break, and being the first competition, I would like to pass on this opportunity and see how it works out.

Okay well, I guess we shall keep it on Thursday then. I'll start the list.

Competition: 6 hr Game dev compettion

Competetor........................Studio

JavaMava.........................(Pixelante Movement)
DrunkCanada......................(Pixelante Movement)

Copy the list and add your name (anything you want) to it. On thursday post in this topic to signify when you're starting, and then in 6 hours (give or take a few mins to uplaod) post what you got.

Leading up to the big day we all can contribute to how we think the judgeing should be, any specific rules. I want you guy to be just as much into deciding the rules as me and my buddy.

This will be the official thread. We will not be making another topic on competition day, everything will be in this topic.

Thanks for your time, and be sure to participate.

So there's no official start time on Thursday? Just some six hours that works for us? If I'm not doing anything, I may give it a try.

I'll bite... but I am too much of a beginner to really do anything decent. I mean, I've programmed pretty much since I've started chatting... but I haven't accomplished that much.

I'm a beginner too. I haven't ever completed a project, let alone in 6 hours, but I'll certainly try anyway.

I have the beginning of an idea of what I might do. In the meantime, back to that particle generator I was working on before this thread. Until thursday then. (I'll be flushing out my idea in the meantime)

Any specific hosting place we should use? Or, to put it more bluntly, where do you suggest I should host my project come thursday, if I in-fact can complete one?
JavaMava

Yep any 6 hour chunk of time that's convenient for you on Thursday. As for a place to upload you can use

http://www.yousendit.com/

just enter any email, give us the link and we can download it from there. If any one's having a tough time thinking of a good 6 hour project I suggest simple, but polished.

Now just going over a few simple questions:

Okay the game play mechanics needs to be done in the six hours. That much we all know:
* Is the beta testing and packaging including in that six hours?
* Is the content creation included in that six hours? What I mean is all the goodies, baddies bosses and helpers would need to be done in those six hours, but actually arranging them out onto a map, is that required to be done in six hours?
* Could a "to be continued element" be done? Like I mean could one project, that was flagged as incomplete at the end of one Thursday be worked on to completion by the end of next week?
* Also, I plan to eventually start working on a project called Pwned CDZine.. the CDZine is an attempt to show that to make a publication, that does not need to be a text only newsletter, and does not need to be glossy big published magazine. Does not (sales speil baleeted), anyways it is a CD that contains a magazine (no, it is not a LiveCD). Anyways, I'm looking for content, maybe people could label games they want available via Pwned CDZine? You can ignore this question if you think it is too spammy.

I look forward to further doing this =^.^=

edit:

Another idea:
Maybe once we get enough developers (lets go with five, the true answer), maybe setup a blog/wiki based setup for this project.

The blog could be for each developer to talk about designs before going up to the game, as well as post mortem at the end of the six hours.

The wiki would be used for documenting the games, such as how to play them, using the game engines used, and the code used in the game (I am guess the games would be open source (not necessarily free software) as to keep people from cheating).

What say you?

"* Is the beta testing and packaging including in that six hours?"
Yep beta testing is included in that 6 hours. As for packaging (arranging files/uploading?) can be done after the 6, but you know lets not let it be too much over

"* Is the content creation included in that six hours? What I mean is all the goodies, baddies bosses and helpers would need to be done in those six hours, but actually arranging them out onto a map, is that required to be done in six hours?"
If you have an idea for a boss, feel free to make a million diagrams on paper about how it should work, however sitting down and writing the code for that cannot start until the 6 hour period. Unless it's a tool/code you've already developed for another project. For example you already have the code in place for an enemy to travel in a sinewave, fine you can use it.

"* Could a "to be continued element" be done? Like I mean could one project, that was flagged as incomplete at the end of one Thursday be worked on to completion by the end of next week?"

If your game isn't presented in any state in the 6 hours (a couple minutes grace) then it can't be in the running for winner. If we get some decent participation from you guys and do this another week in another competition, I don't see why we couldn't make a separate "You missed you're deadline competition" for people that miss the date.

"* Also, I plan to eventually start working on a project called Pwned CDZine.. the CDZine is an attempt to show that to make a publication, that does not need to be a text only newsletter, and does not need to be glossy big published magazine. You scratch my back I'll scratch yours... I'm up for it with my project, but I don't speak for others projects.

I'm not taking control of it, any of you can do what you want with it. I will contribute though.

I run a 3 Hour Game Design Contest. It's design in that I allow the use of pre-fabricated engines, of the user's own creation. I control this by announcing a theme at the very beginning of the contest. See the link in my signature.

Well, I didn't necessarily mean a wiki entry on wikipedia, I meant more of a seperate own wiki. The people on wikipedia, and the site itself, tend to have certain problems.

I was thinking more something hosted on wiki cities: http://wikia.com/wiki/Wikia

Anyways Thursday December 28, 2006, I, Dake Desu, start my entry for 6 hour competion.

1) It will attempt to run on GBA emulators.
2) It will contain atleast one level.
3) It will be a 2d platformer.
4) For base artwork, I will only use that found in the comic Kid Radd http://www.kidradd.com and products created in its forums.

All right fellahs! Lets go!

edit: clarification (4) only refers to what I use as a base. I plan to derive based on that.

edit: I hate typing in the dark.

Okay initial prototypes have have been made. Will be working on characters now.

*yawns*

Good morning. Good to see someone get an early start. I'm still planning some code logic on paper before I officially get started. It's looking to be kind of a platformer/rhythm game...

I probably wont start coding till later in the day.

~3hr mark...

Just finished _most_ of the sprites... two tiles need to be added

Logic for the characters need to be done.

Taking a break.

Edit: according to Game Dev.Net, after this break I have two and half hours left of game making...

Maybe I'll try making a second less hard to do entry after this one.
