I couldn't find any link to this in the FAQ, but the contents of my evolving manuscript are online as PDF files, one per chapter. There's about 800 pages of information there organized for easy access to particular chunks of the device. Even if you don't look at any of the text, be sure to look at the pipeline poster. For easy reference, here is the link to the current content: "The Direct3D Graphics Pipeline" Now with section titles! [Edited by - legalize on September 24, 2007 10:12:36 PM]

Are you planning to involve any DX10 information?

An about the author section would be nice. In other words, an answer to the question, "Who are you and why should I read anything you write?"

I'll have to actually skim the rest later and see how it is.

You should read what he writes if you find him knowledgable, informative, helpful, etc. He's been an DX MVP for years, which means many people seem to find he meets the "listen to me" criteria. The folks at Microsoft have browsed/skimmed his book and found it to be pretty good. I haven't had the time to check the book out, but Richard seems like the kind of guy who would take extra time to make sure it's accurate and useful. If you're still not convinced, why not download a chapter or two and read it... it won't cost you anything.

Personally, I'm just amazed he joined GameDev, a web forum... or did someone add NNTP support? ;)

Promit was just pointing out what a lot of people would ask. Not all of us have time to read 2-3 chapters to see if its good AND we have a lot of newbies on here who wouldn't have a clue if it was good/bad until they'd picked up bad habits, etc. An about the author section would be a great idea. Its faster to skim that then read a few chapters ;-) No offense to the author, this goes for any publication. I'm planning to grab this on Monday when I have a bit of time. Thanks for posting it, hopefully its good :P

I'm not questioning his skills. But how was I supposed to know he's an MVP? You see my point? It's not that I think he doesn't know what he's talking about, it's just that I'd like to know about the guy whose book I'm reading. Plus it's traditional to write such a section in a publication, as Mike2343 says. Just look at the beginning of any Gems book.

And hey, it's one of the few legitimate times to exercise your ego and show off what you've done. May as well take that opportunity, right?

Richard has a biography here. It's actually linked from the main book page, which you'd have reached had you clicked the "Direct3D Graphics Pipeline" link at the top of the download page.

I meant to stick this to the top of the forum last week, but ended up getting busy and forgetting [headshake]. I also need to get around to finishing the updated FAQ - surprised this isn't already in there though!

A while back I got around to reading about half of Richard's manuscript and was very impressed with the readability as well as technical content. When it's finally completed I have little doubt that it will be the definitive reference and guide for Direct3D.

Cheers,
Jack

At some point, sure, but DX9 will be alive for some time because people don't seem to be busting down the doors at CompUSA in order to get Vista.

Now you just have to drop that into the book itself [grin]

I like your poster very much, but I think I found a little mistake.

You put "Lighting" between "View Matrix" and "Projection Matrix", but I think "Lighting" should come before "View Matrix" because coordinates of lights are affected by both view and projection matrices.
