Hello all, I wanted to start a comic about game development for several years now, and I finally got to the stage of roughing out characters. There will probably be like half a year before I get the first few episodes out, but some is better than none, and I don't see a lot of game dev comics out there. I decided to call it Burning Metal, because from my experience, game development feels like burning alive and liking it. It's also the words from my favorite song by KoRn called Hypocrites. Logo: Character #1: Pussy the Insult Comic Cat (team role is graphic designer) Character #2: Murderhorse the Emo Horse (team role is programmer) Character #3: Token, the Token Robot (just a robot) Character #4: Daft Goose, the Insane Goose (team role is project management)

Looks interesting.

I'm just wondering how the programmer horse can type on a keyboard with hooves.

Is it going to be like Dilbert, some sort of dysfunctional cast of animal characters interacting with each other, or something else?

I don't know exactly what it's going to be yet. I have no experience making comics, so I was hoping to just get a starting point and become better from there. What I would like to accomplish with this is a bit above my humour ceiling, so I may need some help thinking about the stories. If any of you here get bored, feel free to suggest some stories that can fit into max 8 panels or so.

@zer0wolf: I have met people who often argue with their bosses that their artwork is good and the other person's mind is just too small to comprehend it. I myself have another problem as a graphic designer - I am too obsessed with quality, often to a very extreme point where it actually hinders my work (and sometimes with no grounded reason). The cat character is going to be a bit of both. She also enjoys telling others exactly what she thinks of them, likes everything done her way, and is very dominating.

@slayemin: How the horse will type with its hooves is a good point. I think I will address it visually, but actually making a strip.

Whoops, I should have specified megalomaniac game designer. [wink]

How about a musician?

Outsourced to India :)

Unfortunately I am not a good musician (although I finished musical school and can play accordion and synth), and I never knew any good musicians, so I wouldn't know how to treat that character. I am thinking of adding a cute donkey though, maybe as a guest character (horse's friend?)

Looks cool.

In true indy dev fashion, the comic should never, ever, get past 3 issues. You need to keep tinkering with the concept of the characters and relaunching the strip.

I can't wait for the strip to do the storyline where 3 weeks of dev time was wasted because the emo horse was busy posting whiny rants on some forum about some thing that 'normal people' who leave their basements do.

Unsolicited Advice and Opinion Time!:

I've messed around with trying to start on at least 5 or 6.. or 8 .. instances of comics, and I've found that I dawdle around too much planning characters and making concept sketches and worrying about storylines.

The one successful(???) comic I made was for a student newspaper, and I actually delivered because an artificial deadline was imposed upon me: have one page at the end of the month, no matter what. Also I got paid 10 dollars. All the planning stuff doesn't particularly manner as such - especially with the weird style of comic I was doing, but I think it's easy to get stuck on a list of what "you're supposed to have" before starting a comic on any kind of comic.

The truth is, drawing a comic is not like building a house with a foundation, a frame, then drywall, etc, or whatever. It's an active, ongoing, dynamic process in which carefully planned character bios don't really matter because the reader is reading an ongoing comic, not character bios (I should hope). You would be amazed at how readers pick up what's going on and even what's not going on, the personalities and backgrounds and relationships of characters even when you don't spell them out or explain everything and it might even be best if you don't, because then the reader has something to try to read into and wonder about, and something to discover as they read along.

So what I'm saying is that the next time I draw a comic, I'm just going to have a rough concept in my head and just start drawing the comic itself without worrying about all the details. And I'll make sure to give myself an artificial deadline, like one strip every week, no matter what. The characters and details will figure themselves out along the way, or I can even change them if I decide I didn't like the way I did something -- it's my goddamn comic after all.

Right: just start drawing the comic. And good luck, doing a comic is really hard!

HA! I like it. Excellent art style. Only panel 5 is a bit off.

I genuinely hope your dialogue is as good as your drawing.

ROFL, awesome!

so THATS how a horse types on a keyboard :D very clever.

I'm curious... what is the hook used for? Does the horse moonlight as captain hook (or a pirate lord)? Or perhaps a personal hay harvesting sickle?

Anyways, congrats on the first comic strip! Hopefully there will be many more to come!

Out of curiosity, what software are you using to draw with?

*tear* awesome. I wonder if you can keep up that detail. Very nice.
