I know there's already a post up on this, but it's 2 years old and I wanted to comment on this. I was on Steam looking for a demo, when I stumbled upon the most amazing game that I'd never heard of until then. It's called Mount & Blade, and it's something truly special. Apparently it's been around for a while, and people have been talking about this game throughout its development cycle. Apparently it was developed by a handful of people in Turkey, with 2 main developers, a husband and wife duo. It was officially released in September of 2008.

There are two things that really amaze me about this game:

1. The combat. It's fun and dynamic (if a bit unwieldy), and the mounted combat is like nothing I've ever experienced. It's totally thrilling to ride around the battlefield on a horse and taking out 9 guys on your own because you're mounted and they're not. It's not a given, the game definitely makes you work for it (a battle that size can last like 10 minutes), and it's entirely possible that you'll be overtaken. It's a ton of fun to spear guys with your lance, and, if you're knocked off of your horse, fighting for your life with sword and shield against the remaining foes. The different types of weapon configurations are really compelling, too. I haven't experience archery, too much, but from what I've seen you can become really effective, even atop a horse at full gallop. I tend to prefer a shield, since you can block more or less anything by just right-clicking, but if you don't have one, or it gets destroyed, you're forced to rely on your parrying skill (and I'm not talking about a number, I mean your actual skill at anticipating the blows and blocking them from the direction that they are coming). I've already mentioned how I prefer a lance/spear, though you can wreak some serious havok with a sword on your horse, too, but sometimes that's not an option. In fact, for tournaments, training, and various other encounters, your gear is totally randomized, forcing you to learn to use the wide variety of armaments in the game. You also must rely on your own resourcefulness. For example, I fought in a tournament today and was given a shield and a hatchet, but others were given a horse. This ended very badly for me, as I was charged outright, the rider's momentum allowed him to blow through my shield, nearly killing me in a single blow. But in this situation, you have to keep your wits about you and attempt to procure a horse that you or someone else has liberated from an enemy rider.

2. The second amazing thing about this game is its epic scale. Think medieval Spore. You start out as a lone guy on a horse. You've got a sword, crossbow, and some fish (to eat), and that's about it. From this point, you can go forth and make your way in the world however you see fit. You can perform tasks for others, collecting taxes, hunting bounties, delivering things, etc. You can kill bandits or attack traders. You can participate in tournaments, herd cattle, trade goods. There's tons to do. So right now it sounds more like medieval Freelancer, I know. But that's just how you start. Eventually you can raise your own band, and they'll level-up alongside you (have I mentioned this is an RPG, too?), or you can hire mercenaries and even some special heroes in the taverns. As your wealth, power, and fame grow, you can turn that band into an army and siege villages, cities, and castles. You can take prisoners, capture a castle, start your own fiefdom, and go to war with neighboring kingdoms. It's really crazy how far you can go, and the level of depth involved along the way. Battles can even get up to 1000 troops, all of them fully detailed, and singly engagable, and they're VERY dynamic. When you start a battle, you're a good distance away from your enemy, which you must find (before they find you), and you can order your troops to a number of positions and tactics. If you're on a horse (and you really should be), you're going to want to fight on a flat plain, so if possible, you'll want to lure your enemy to one (if you can find it). You put your archers on a hill overlooking the plain, set your spearmen against the enemy calvary, and use your swordsmen and calvary as you see fit (often with you charging alongside them). It can be very difficult, but even losing is fun, as the enemy will usually cut you down mid-charge (anyone can get dragged by their horse, an impressive, if funny, effect). I remember wanting to see what fighting traders was like, so I attacked some, expecting a bunch of businessmen on donkeys escorting a wagon. They were fully armored, all 32 on horses, and when I saw this, I fled, but they caught up to me. All the while, I was watching them charging after me with glee, as you really get the impression that you're about to be trampled by 32 horses.

This game is a ton of fun, and the full version is only $30. I highly recommend it. You can download it from the main site (linked above), or on Steam. The game is free to download and play until level 7, at which time you must buy a key. I've spent the last 3 days telling people about this game, and I've only come across one person who's heard of it. I'd love to hear other people's reactions, and if you haven't done so, spread the word. This one is really special.

I've heard of it. I don't remember it looking like that though, I guess it got a face lift before release. I like the subject matter and sounds like something I might play, but I don't play a lot of games anymore. Oh well.

I've met it in a front-page SomethingAwful review, a long time ago (surprisingly, on that time, the game was also praised by SA), when it costed around $10 or $14 bucks.

Very fun and addictive, countless hours galloping and killing the bad dudes over the land, always over a horse. :P

Archery is definetly something very good too, just like throwing and stabbing people to death with your horse running over them.

If someone manages to get this type of combat gameplay and add multiplayer support, that would be awesome. Yet, Darkfall promised it. Let's see how this turns out.

i played i for quite a while. the battles are great, but the game still leaves a lot to be desired in the RPG aspects. the towns are basically all the same, the named NPCs only offer a shallow background story and after looting the land for a while with your ever-growing army i really missed some relief in gameplay. after all, the battles are all what the game is about...
i'm gonna pick it up again, as soon as they have some content update.

Me and a friend bought a serial key years back when it was still an very early beta. Very, VERY good money spent. It meant months of entertainment with a gameplay almost never seen before(My friend still plays it from time to time)

The payment scheme Taleworlds used is very interesting. They had a demo(which I think they advertised here on gamedev actually) that was pretty stable, but rather limited. Since it was still in beta they offered the keys at high discount to sponsor the development

I still have the key somewhere if anyone wants to buy it(That would give me almost 400% profit) [wink]
Okay, actually I would say that if anyone wants to buy it, then buy it themselves so you can support those great developers

They sometimes promised multiplayer support in Mount and Blade 2, if that ever got into development [smile]

This game is really fun. I played it awhile back (a few years maybe). I don't have my key anymore :(

Too bad it's singleplayer. I only pay full price for multiplayer games now. I never pay more than 10usd for a single player game. Just not enough longevity to be worth the cost.

Yep, I've been playing it off and on since the 0.7 release. Easily the best designed RPG combat of all time. There are not enough RPG games that make combat fun, let alone enthralling and addictive.

I became skilled enough with a bow that I could launch a single arrow from horseback into the sky, and nail people in the face as they galloped on horseback around the battlefield. Those are fond memories. I think my greatest achievement was taking out an army of 750 Dark Army troops on my own. I think they may have removed the Dark Army faction from the game since then. Too bad, because I loved out-knighting those guys.

The game is easily worth the money.

One of the best games ever made IMO and I can't believe they haven't picked up and taken the idea to the MMO or at least 64 player online level.

If there's a mob of guys I prefer the mounted sword, it allows you to get in more hits. I basically go in at a canter and slash them down. With a lance you have to get up to full speed and can only take out one guy at a time, then have to turn around and do it over again.

The ONLY problem I have with the game is that there is no story line or multiplayer. Basically you play the game for a long time, get powerful enough to conquer everything, and then have nothing to do. I'm hoping now that the game is done someone will go back and make it multiplayer.

Sounds like Bethesda should have taken some advice from these guys when they made Oblivion - mounted combat is a key missing feature. Perhaps they could team up for an expansion.

The combat and melee stuff is definitely different and I like the horse riding. However while I prefer fighting on foot, it seems this is impractical because you either get blocked in a mob or some horses trample you... maybe it's a skill thing though.

The other issue is that as I'm about to real the end of the free version, I feel I'm running out of things to do. No villages will rebel when I try and steal their stuff now I have a bunch of guys in my team, and massacring an entire village is thing I most want to do. Raiding parties also avoid me :(
Most villages and castles are virtually empty and I didn't see many good quests... what happens next in the game? Go on, convince me it's worth my money...

Try a tourney. I just won my first and netted myself 1500. You can also raise an army, declare your allegiance to a kingdom, and go to war.

What don't you like about the mounted combat? You're extremely vulnerable on foot.

Mount and Blade didn't get nearly enough credit that they deserved. Firstly, they're created a new class of game.. there's no other quite like it. Secondly, the realism is compelling, the battles play out like you would think medieval battles would. Then, they have amazing game play... sword fighting using mouse gesters and horse archery. Maybe the graphics are so hot, but game play is 100 times more important IMHO.

You need a very high agility attribute to run around on foot without being crushed. When being chased by mobs, you pretty much have to fight the whole fight while backing up, staying outside of them at all costs. It also helps to have a backup horse to run to when you find yourself overwhelmed.

When facing mounted enemies on foot, my strategy was to keep moving around, stepping to the side of their approach as they charge, slashing them hard, then finding the next approaching enemy as that one loops around. If you don't keep moving, the mounted enemies will all slow down and hack at you simultaneously.

If you want to see a lot of battle, the best thing to do is join a faction that's at war with several other factions. Then you can take over enemy cities and castles, and attempt to claim them in your name. If I'm not mistaken, you can even rebel and create your own faction.

I've been playing it since the early beta. Its progress has been incredibly slow. It has some neat ideas in it, but I can't get past the fact that there's no point.

I liked the variety of the units, but it was too hard to obtain them and train them. One of the best units, the Sword Sister, is only created by liberating farmer women from slavers and training them to their level cap. However, they are so incredibly weak in their early levels that they probably won't survive that long. Also, I never noticed that the unit combat order system ever actually did anything.

It didn't seem like there was very much difference between the weapons. Realistically, a crappy sword will kill pretty much as well as a nice sword, but it would be nice if there were some benefit to making the effort in aquiring the stuff.

I think the point is just to become powerful and rich, or to conquer the entire continent in your faction's name. Or at least those were the things I sought.

The best way to train weak units is to let them watch. Bring some mounted units along with them to a fight, and give your unmounted units a stand-ground order, while giving your mounted units a charge order. You can either join the fight, or stand back and protect the trainees.

When the number of people in each battle is limited due to the army sizes, your army joins the fight in that order.

I, too, find myself quite unable to raise an army. They just keep dying. But I'm learning. And as I increase my equipment, I find the fights get easier, as is raising money. I'm finding the top priority is the horse, though. And then perhaps the shield.

Just as an update, I now have a 30 man army, half of which is mounted. Stick to the taverns, you'll find some named companions (that you can equip, carry some extra horses so that you can get them mounted right way), and some expensive, but worthwhile mercenaries to hire.

I spent last night charging around with the king and some of my fellow lords (I'm a vassal and I have my own village and colors) destroying other armies, capturing lords, and sieging castles. It's great fun.

If you need help with the funds, look around for tournaments and bet the max on yourself each round. If you win, you get about 4.2k denar.

First time round, I found two quests which were of the type "go and collect my 3000 denars and I'll reward you". So I did the quests and kept all the money... with ~6K you can hire an awful lot of muscle early in the game.

CyberSlag5k, thank you so much. This thread convinced me to try it, and Ive been playing it non-stop for 3 days. Best game Ive played in a long time. And if I meet the king of the Rhodoks again, he'll pay for running away from me after he swore he wouldnt try to escape. Next time Im putting my lance in his eye socket.
CyberSlag5k
CyberSlag5k
You captured a king? That's awesome. I've taken them down in combat, personally, twice. Huge experience. But they've always escaped me. Lords I've captured, and gotten between $2.7k and $4.7k in ransom. I can only imagine what a king is worth.

I'm glad you're enjoying it. It's such a great game, I want to get as many people playing as possible. I feel the game deserves the recognition, and that people deserve the amazing experience that it is.

So far, I've gotten about 6 people to buy the game, and they, in turn, have gotten at least 2 others. Of course, that doesn't count any of the 650+ people that have read this thread, hopefully they're enjoying and supporting this masterpiece as well.
