Hello, I'm planning for a game like iphone app which is going be mostly 2D with some 'possible' 3D. For my requirements, I'm going to need - an easy art integration workflow - possibly some type of scripting which can be downloaded and run from a server - some physics - animation support and I've been looking to sio2 which seems to do everything I need but was wondering if a product like cocoa 2d might do the job. as great as sio2 is, the lack of an api reference and large number of cookbook like coding samples makes it a bit harder for me to pick it up. any advice is really appreciated. thanks.

The iPhone license forbids the download and execution of scripts or other executable content outside of their given APIs. Other than that there are several good free iPhone libraries (someone ported SDL over to iPhone, also there is http://oolongengine.com/ , and if your willing to spend some $$$ there is http://unity3d.com/ which comes highly recommended ).

People have ported over chipmunk onto the iPhone so you might be able to find it on the net ( though I doubt it, people seem to keep those proprietary).

Good Luck!

well, there arent many "2D" engines (other than torque, they have a free eval to play with, and cocos2d (free)).
for 3D, grab unity, its great.

im writing a 2D engine atm, but wont be done for a while ;)

for physics, box2d has a iphone port, as does chipmonk (which is used by cocos2d).
your never as good as they say you were, never as bad as they say you was.

Well for 2D and 3D game take a look at SIO2 engine... its a free and open source 3d game engine for iphone and ipod touch, alot of commercial games have already been released with it and many more are currently in development using the engine.

There's also a large community based around it. For more information please take a look at:

Here's a quick list of the current features:

OpenAL: For 3D positional sounds (FX) and ambient music.
Theora: For realtime MPEG4 (ogv) playback.
Ogg: For MP3 style playback.
LUA: As the default scripting language that includes all the SIO2 API + all the OpenGL ES API, and uses SWIG to generate the necessary C wrapper. All OpenGL ES & OpenAL instructions are also available from LUA as well as the specific SIO2 API.
libJPEG: For fast JPEG decompression.
Zlib: To create and compress the SIO2 fileformat (.sio2)
libPNG: For fast PNG decompression.
Bullet: For Rigid & Soft Body physic, as well as for collision detection, collision feedback, custom sensors and collision triggers.
