Hello. I have a prototype game I want to use to play with some AI. There are two teams of ships that move and shoot much like forward firing naval ships. My question is can you identify what techniques I'll need to research to have any success or recommend a primer that will teach me enough to break down that problem myself. Thanks in advance. -Wilson

Things you might want to explore:

Finite State Machines (preferably through the State Design Pattern and a State Machine)

Steering Behaviors (as Nanoha mentioned)

Event Based Programming (vs. Poll Based) (similar to how Java or Actionscript implements it - they both do pretty good on the Event Based Paradigm).
