I've put together a poll to test the subjective reaction of a viewer to certain stimuli. Basically, there are four images. Each image depicts the same pairs of circles. The images differ in the type of gradient rendered in the background. The poll is to see which pairs of circles people think show the most contrast. There is a secondary question of whether or not a particular image is aesthetically pleasing.

Both questions are completely subjective and have no right or wrong answer. I'm testing to see if perception of the circles changes based on the viewer.

I found the first image to the best easiest on the eye, but that's because of the smooth gradients I think.

That seems to be the consensus in the poll results.

So yeah, the two circles actually are the same color. The difference in their color is all an optical illusion. I'm actually in the planning stages for a painting, and I'm trying to figure out the fundamental elements of this illusion.

The top right image is the most appealing to me since it seems to be the most interesting (full white/black gradient) without being being jarring (instant white/black transition). The first one is the easiest on the eyes, but not very interesting. The bottom left seems to be the most constrasting one, but that's probably just a trick of the instant black/white transition right next to the left circle. If I focus hard on the circles, the bottom two don't seem to have much of a contrast difference.
