You know you've been playing too many video games when...

I don't play that many video games but when I find a game I really enjoy, I get sucked right into it.

I remember I was playing Oblivion for the Xbox360 almost all the time. I woke up- I played it. I got home- I played it. I made myself dinner- and I played it.
Call this unhealthy as you will but I really didn't have any other plans at the time and it was too much fun for me.

Anyway, one day I was doing the dishes and I swear to you that I saw a cursor in the center of my view, with the words "dishes - A to wash" underneath with the rest of the Oblivion HUD in my sight. I knew then and there I needed to take a long break from games for a while. And I did.

Another time I've realized I needed to take a break from games was when I was outside taking a walk in the park. I stopped to take a break and looked at the sky and the trees swaying and all the detail nature could provide and I wondered, "How can the world render all these graphics?!"

-SO. Has anyone had a similar experience? Or at least a time when they knew they needed to take a good long break from games of any kind?

This was a few years ago. I never said anything here because, well, it's embarrassing to admit. But now that time has past, I thought I'd start this topic up. :P
Holy crap, you can read!

Big deal. After coding a hex minesweeper for 2 days (about 10-12 hours a day), I saw the hexmap with the colorful numbers flashing especially when i closed my eyes. When I coded/drew GUI, I saw buttons and texts. After working on my thesis for 25-30 hours in a row (in the last minute of course) I saw formatted text flashing.

I often think about how real life could be rendered. (Shit, that's a bad thing).
When I was a kid, and was into Lego, I was always thinking about how things could be made form Legos (Lego city).

I guess if I was a medic, I would think about the disgusting organs and all the shit makes the human body.

That happens, and that's a bad thing.

I got really addicted to Rock Band when I first played it. I almost exclusively played drums for weeks on end. I actually woke up numerous nights with my foot in the air as I was trying to hit the bass drum pedal in my sleep.

Oftentimes when I get sucked into a game the reason I know I need to take a break is when I can't sleep because I keep hearing the sound effects/music playing in the background (aka my head). I once played Metroid Prime so much in one day that when I laid down that night I saw myself in the Phendrana Drifts area complete with those blue dinosaur things whose name escapes me at the moment. I would hear the music and the sound effects of the shooting gun and I'd sit there and try and figure out how to beat the boss.

Or, my lowest moment would probably be when I woke up one morning and went "So THAT'S how you defeat the boss!"

I need a life :(

I used to dream about Paradox strategy games (CK, EU3 etc). I would plan strategies out in my head then play them the next day. Overdose...

After playing Starcraft (the original) for too long, I would hear that high pitched SCV-harvesting-crystals noise for days afterwards.

Starcraft, original, too. Short glimpses of health-bars on real people passing.

Having played alot of UT2K4 over a few weeks I had cause to go outside one night, to the pub or a night club I forget which, as I was walking along I spotted an aircraft light in the sky and tried to select the AVRIL to lock onto it.

There followed a few moments of confusion when this didn't happen...

My wife dreams about games after playing too much. I don't dream so that problem is avoided.

However when we did a back-to-back marathon of all James Bond films at college, I was awake for about 48 hours straight watching some crazy number of films. When I went outside, I thought I was Bond. I kept thinking people I walked past in hallways were spies, and wondered why girls I spoke to didn't immediately sleep with me (being encrusted with Dorito crumbs in a 3-day-old shirt didn't enter my thoughts).

I mentioned before being freaked out about Half-life Barnacles, but my usual one is looking for sentry placement spots wherever I go.

Also, in addition to the usual game-related stories, I once tried to copy paste text from a sheet of paper. :(

We've all done this at least once. What's bad is when you have to look down to see why it's not working. XD

I often play around with emulation for older games. This has had somewhat adverse consequences on my life. Every once in a while, I'll make a serious error. Did I lock my keys in the car again? Did I forget to take that online test for school? Did I just say something regretful? No problem, I'll just revert to save state 1. Disappointment ensues.

I can identify with you my friend. I try to keep calm after playing GTA, but when I get inside my car right after playing it, I seem to drive a little faster than usual :3 but no frenzies or stuff like that ;o).

If anyone has ever played Sims they might know this: you keep playing Sim week after Sim week, Monday through Sunday. And when you stop playing, you actually think that the current day is the current day in the Sims game. This is freaking me out, cuz I usually stop playing on Sim Friday, and then I think "aw weekend awesm", and then I realize "crap, Monday >.<".

And then there's this last one, which doesn't refer to games:
I'm a little artist if I may say so. I have a Bamboo graphics tablet and enjoy working with it, because I can customize the buttons to keystrokes. So one of my buttons is the undo-button, which is in the upper left corner of the tablet. When I then go back to pen and paper, guess what I'm trying to do instead of grabbing a rubber.

And finally, here is the story that definitely damaged my personal life:
I loved playing Final Fantasy VIII, the one with Squall and Rinoa. In that game, the main character Squall is very introvertive in the beginning. In his opinion, everyone should care for their own problems. Depending on others is weak. Having friends hurt, because when they leave you, all is in vein. Talking about feelings is nonesense, because there's no point in it. This attitude of his came over to my side. He changed it in the middle of the game somewhere, but I somehow didn't. I don't think that anyone is really interested in feelings of others. Relying on someone is a bad idea, because they generally let you down. Friends shouldn't be taken as a big role in my life, because they come and go as they wish, and therefore they're worthless. There are only very, very few persons whom I really trust, all the other ones are useless and are just a waste of air and time. I already had a little part of this attitude before playing FF8 due to some circumstances, but the game manifested it even more in me.

So yeah, I do play too much. But heck, it's my life. If people can't handle me like this, then what do I care? The ones I love are the ones that love me, and that's just enough for me. And even if I can help solving others' problems, I don't want to share mine. It's none of their business, and they would just get my hopes up and let me down again.

Yeah, I think 'gamehaze' is the term you're looking for. I get really messed up sometimes when I sleep straight after a long gaming session, and i'll dream about the game all night, making the next day very weird.

Recently, with Starcraft 2 multiplayer occupying my evenings, I've found myself going into work, opening Visual Studio, and starting to click around the screen like crazy, trying to maintain a high APM while I code.

I've had some everyday problems from too much FPS gaming. Taking the shortest route is not always advisable in RL, and strafing looks just weird. At least I can throw grenades and cigarette butts with equal accuracy.

But... my worst moment was typing "feuerzeug download" into google.

There are times I wish I can have save games / save state so I can do things differently. Recently I was in an accident (hurt my ribs, but looking back and saw how close a car tire is to your body / head, it was interesting experience) I really wish things happened differently.

Then there are times worse than that, and I wish I can restart life with current knowledge. Not the win lottery things, but more on choices. It was more on who to trust and who to listen. Can't elaborate much as it was related to family, and it was more on who NOT to listen to. Trust me, when money is in the picture, people can get crazy.
