Notch just announced on his blog that his server crashed due to secret Saturday update and the increased popularity of Minecraft:

Quote:

Free Minecraft until this gets fixed

Phew. Wow. I never should’ve tried doing an update without fixing the performance issues.

I’ve disabled everything CPU intensive on the web server now, and put the downloads on an Amazon Cloud thingie. Since I’ve disabled payments as well, this means that Minecraft will be free to play until this all gets sorted.

For more information, go to http://www.minecraft.net/

And as he says on Minecraft.Net, this even got a name, the "Free-To-Play weekend":
Quote:

Until this all gets sorted out, I'm officially calling a "free-to-play weekend", or however long this will take to fix. You will need to have a paid account to play it later on when this gets fixed though.
If you want to keep track of the latest developments, please follow my blog. I also post stuff on my twitter, but there's a lot of nonsense there as well.

Happy crafting GDNet! http://www.minecraft.net/

(I bought the game, though)

I was just about to post the same thing. [smile]

If you haven't yet gotten addicted to Minecraft, now is your chance to try it out. Do so.

Now I get how he made 600k.

In two weeks,... Or was it one?

Two weeks. He was out of the country and so couldn't transfer the funds to his bank account, when sales started to spike.

The 600k, is in euros, so according to Google, that's $782,580 usd.

Yesterday, before the servers crashed, Minecraft passed 7000 sales in 24 hours. That's about $91,000 usd in a single day.

The interesting thing is that his sales have probably gone up due to all the attention the game has gotten from PayPal seizing his money. In the long run, I think the PayPal fiasco is working in his favor.

He was doing absurd sales even before this crash. But I think the recent mention on Penny Arcade is what overloaded him.

I want to know how much business he'd have now...

That Penny Arcade comic mirrors exactly my first nights. I went into this game knowing absolutely zero, I had no idea how to combine stuff, nor did I know there was a day/night cycle, or that there where zombies roaming around at night.

On my first night I just ran, my health reduced to half. Day came and I built a tower I could escape to during the night time. That night I was prepared, but still afraid. The day was short, and I didn't have all that much time to build something solid.

I now live in f*cking Masada! Try conquering this you Zombie f*ckers!

i liked it when you could hardly get anything done for all the monsters.I had to build my fort on an island to get away from all of them.

You know that you can press the I-Key to bring up your inventory where you can craft things together?

At first you need to have planks. Simply put one tree-trunk in there and get the planks out.
Then put the 4 planks into your crafting grid and you have a workbench (Rightklick on it).

I watched some of the Youtube clips for this game, and it looks sweet! It totally reminds me of playing with legos, tinker toys, etc growing up. I only wish the server was up so I could register and start playing, it looks like a cool way to waste a couple hours, haha.

Anyone know if he has future ideas for it? I showed some people and it seems like the possibilities for multiplayer and other game modes are endless (3D/sandbox tower defense?!).

I played that game a long time ago and put walls around a whole level because I wanted to have a huge impact on the server. I was so proud of myself until I came back a week later and saw the the server admin reset the level. Wasting hours doing something then finding out someone can delete my hard work with a click of a button was enough to make me lose interest in that game.

It's back up now.

If you register then you can play single-player survival, which is entirely local, so you don't have to worry about server resets. The sense of achievement after making a huge project single-handedly is awesome. :)

I lost a night of sleep last night because of this game. Usually I'm pretty well aware of what the time is and stubbornly choose to keep pressing on. This was one of the few times where I had no idea how late it had actually gotten until it was already 4am.

Same here! The game wasn't all that fun or entertaining until I figured out that tree stump -> wood -> lots of useful. Now I have a nice little house carved out of the face of a cliff, with a pool of lava underneath it.

Also, pro tip:
Only carry as much as you're going to use and/or leave a trail of bread crumbs. You'll never know when you accidentally find a secret cave with good lewt, only to trip an invisible trigger, which in turn spawns zombies that rape you in a few seconds flat. The damage (items lost) will be minimized if you are lucky enough to make it to your body in time.

I saw last night that it was bock online, so I bought it and downloaded it. That was about 9:30pm. I was up til 2am playing, and had to force myself to go to bed.

I just found out today via youtube vids that you can make powered mine carts as well as switches. I have a feeling it will be a long night once again as I want to test that out, as well as TNT :)

I think the possibilities of this game are huge. I also saw online that you can make obsidian, but you can't use it for anything. Hopefully he puts in the ability to use that to create items.

Everyone who fully understands assembler code should go and make something like this:

Here is the reference for redstone electricity:

Maybe someone could make something awesome?

There's no invisible trigger, monsters will spawn in any dark area. What exactly constitutes "dark" I don't know yet, but that technically includes the inside of your base if you don't include any lighting. It's imperative to find coal as soon as possible.
