Recently, I've noticed an increasing amount of old threads bumped, as in 7 years old threads. It also seems like it's unintentional most of the time, such someone replying with "Yeah, I agree with X" believing that it's an ongoing discussion.

Shouldn't something be done about this? Such as automatic thread closing after X months of inactivity or just a notice on the post reply page?

You know we just got back to discussing this topic amongst the moderators as well. In the old site, threads a certain age became "Archived" in that they were locked against further participation and editing. That was a custom feature of a custom forum. When we came over to IPS there was no ready replacement, so we decided to see if it was still going to be a problem before bothering to figure out how to implement it in the new software. Personally, I was hoping that for some reason or another this wouldn't be so bad anymore, but I guess it's one of those things where yea, we had good reason to do it the first time and that reason hasn't seemed to have gone away...

I guess it's not a huge problem or anything, it just seems confusing sometimes.

Totally. Even I've gotten tricked into participating in a necro'd thread a time or two

Everything in software industry works in cycles.

Think of it this way, in 2 years, people won't need to type the answers, since their replies from 10 years ago will be relevant again. Isn't future great?

I think it's a bigger problem for GD.net because you pop up in tons of google searches. I've almost posted in 3 year old thread i've run into on google.\

I'm surprised IPB doesn't have that feature. You should ask for it as a feature request as it seems like something a lot of IPB forums could use.

Good news everyone! Invision has just announced their archive ability for the new 3.3 release. It's a few months down the road but it's coming!

...

*Looks forward to further irony in a few months time.*

That was not even close to an example of thread necro'ing

I think I should bookmark this thread and make a note to post again in 2015.
