360 red ring of death :(

I am in the same boat as you. To me, the fix seems too expensive considering the rather low retail cost of a new console.
I am tempted to towel-trick mine to get all the life I can (if any) out of it, smash it with a baseball bat in anger at Microsoft when it finally catches fire, and then see if I feel like buying a new one and giving them more money after that.

The towel thing seems dumb because I dont need to reset the red rings, even with the rings my xbox still plays and starts games but crashes immediately, which seems like a probable overheat due to what these guys are talking about.

Is it still in warranty? There's an MS site where you can enter your serial number and it tells you the warranty expiration date. I thought mine was out of warranty, but the site said I was still covered, so the replacement was free.

The towel trick did relieve the symptoms of mine temporarily, but eventually the red-ring got more and more persistent.

I'd also advise this - at some point (a while ago, don't remember when) I believe Microsoft started extending the warranty on newly purchased Xboxes. I don't remember the specifics, but it's easy enough to check.

Mine RROD'd once, but it was out-of-warranty, so I had to bite the bullet. Good news was that the refurbished (or whatever they did) one had the better drive in it, so it doesn't sound like a jet aircraft and scratch disks anymore...

the RROD is a general hardware failure. It is commonly a problem with the GPU coming unsettled for various reason. This is not, however, the only error that causes the RROD error to show. There is no single fix to the problem, because it is an indicator of a general hardware failure not a specific hardware failure, despite a single problem being the most common.

They probably have other ways to diagnose problems once they get them in for repair, but seeing a single potential fix may be for a problem that is not your problem.

I would definitely at least try the towel trick first, because if you're going to fuck with the insides you may as well try it. If it doesn't work you can always open it up afterward.

Problem is the towel trick seems like its to "tell the xbox its not actually red-ring anymore". Mine keeps going from green to red ring back and forth. Both have the same results, as soon as I get past the menus and start the game, I get vertical bars and it freezes. To me it seems when everyone else has red ring it doesnt show anything, which leads me to believe its an overheat, cuz if I let it sit it will go back to green.

It was my (possibly flawed) understanding that the "towel trick" is used to purposely overheat the components in order to re-set the weak soldering. In any case, it seems a little dangerous and/or extreme.
