Well, with my MMORTS hopefully in beta mode in 4 to 6 months, I'm trying to find ways to promote the game. I have the following

Website: http://www.worldalpha.com

DevBlog: http://www.worldalpha.com/devblog/

Facebook Page: http://www.facebook.com/worldalpha/

Twitter: http://www.twitter.com/worldalphagame/

I don't have any videos, but I do have a YouTube account.

What other effective avenues can I setup to help market the game? I haven't done stuff like delicious, stumbleupon, etc. Are any of these really effective?

Any help would be appreciated.

I personally don't find stuff like Delicious and StumbleUpon to be high-value activities. What's important when you're trying to market yourself is to spend time doing the beefiest stuff with the most results. In your case, I'd go do interviews about the game. Look around for blogs and sites that cover indie games or upcoming games in general, and ask the guys in charge of those if you can arrange an interview. Talk about all the cool stuff you can do and why players will have a great time playing your game. What's in it for THEM, specifically? Seek to prove that when you talk about the game.

Don't know if this will be a successful strategy, but I just created a general Twitter account TweetGamersNow, and registered tweetgamers.com. I'm going to make a general game Twitter portal, to have something to promote my own game, but hopefully other games as well. Over 100 followers after only 2 days. Check it out and follow it at

Now this discussion has changed from a question about how to market, to a marketing announcement. Moving to Your Announcements.

Hey Worldalpha,

I think you're already on the right track by trying to do all of the above. Your goal should be to create a small, early adopter community of people that are highly passionate about your game concept (even if they aren't passionate about the game itself right off the bat). You want to find this core group and use them to build a community around your game.

Claiming all of the social media pages is a great place to start. Beyond that, I recommend figuring out where your "early adopter" audience lives, and then determining the best way to reach them.

Three things come to my mind right off the bat:
1) You share or post a blog post chronicling your development challenges and how you overcame some hurdles to developer communities, such as this one (Gamedev.net) or reddit.com/r/gamedev. This gets other game developers interested in your project, and their feedback can be invaluable. And most importantly, many game developers are also game players
2) Share your game with the indie game player communities. There are a few of these, but the one that I like the best is reddit.com/r/indiegaming because it's an active community of both indie game players and indie game developers.
3) Find MMORTS game forums and review websites dedicated to your type of game and spread the word to those communities as well.

Just doing marketing for the sake of marketing won't get you anywhere, you need to figure out who loves your product as it is and go find them. Good luck!
