HD Controller Problems with Win2K

Does it happen to be one of those ATA-100 drives? Windows 2000 has problems with them. I''m not sure what you should do now, but when installing Windows 2000, you have to supply it with 3rd party drivers (ie, the ATA-100 drivers).

Hey man, I have 3 new computer systems I built, all having ATA 100 drives & Win2k and they are fine. I wouldn''t believe thats it.

You said you basically, you took out yer innerds of your old one and replaced them all...then stuffed your old hard drive in there.......First place I would double check is your bios......it should still load ...but I don''t think you are going to like your results. When you replaced your mobo..and are using your old Win2K config...its going to load the old mobo drivers and may cause some VERY unhappy results. If I were you, I would quickly throw the old one back together, backup the info you need off that drive, then rebuild to you new one, and format that drive and start from scratch. That also will clear the possibility of wrong drivers still being loaded.

If it wont even load your hard drive, make sure you didnt fry it. It should still try to load, I think your bios settings may not be set correctly. That, or you have two masters on the same IDE channel.

Use the Win2k CD-Rom to make boot disks. Try those and see what happens. You''ll probably need to resetup Win2K.

I''ve already scoured the MS page looking for help. The HD _is_ intact, I can access it from linux (as a slave, of course) just fine. I set the BIOS to "failsafe mode" to make sure it boots right (in "optimal mode" Win2K can''t get input from the keyboard, heh). This is the same hard drive that I used to use with Win2K, so that shouldn''t be the problem. I did expect the drivers to not work, but I was hoping console (not the recovery console, that _does_ work ) or safe mode would work. I had that hard drive partitioned well (only Win2K was on C) so I''ll reformat that one partition and reinstall it if nothing else works (I can backup the few files I need using Linux).

Yeah, reformatting the C drive, then reinstalling Win2K seemed to work. Now to return my new CPU since they gave me a 900Mhz 200FSB instead of the 1200Mhz 266FSB that I payed for (it even says so on the reciept ).

I just remembered that Windows 2000 doesn''t actually like the Promis ATA-100 controller on motherboard.
