I don't have any magic answer for you on securing funding. You now have more insight into the matter of grants (an option you brought up).

Raising funding is hard. A lot of guys get a side job, cut down on expenses to save more, even go into temporary credit card debt. When funding routes are blocked, when friends, family, and fools won't give you the money, it's all up to you.
