Hello,

I’m conducting a small survey aimed at independent game developers, hobbyists, students, solo developers, teams, and small studios.

The goal is to better understand the challenges people face during game development: time management, budget constraints, motivation, tools, external feedback, visibility, finishing and publishing games, project abandonment, and more.

A friend and I are exploring ideas for a future tool that could help creators make better progress on their projects. However, before building anything, we want to understand the real problems that game creators actually experience.

The survey is anonymous and takes about 5 minutes to complete.

If you're a game developer, have started a project, finished a game, abandoned a project, or are seriously considering creating one, your experience and feedback would be extremely valuable to us.

A big thank you to everyone who takes a few minutes to participate. Your input will help us better guide the development of our project.

Hello, thanks, I answered your survey. I'm not your target audience. The lack of a tool, just isn't my life barrier. I've got more fundamental survival pressures than that, and I imagine some of the indies can relate. There are things like... I still need to work on my car some... My sister is coming to visit... I'm being bored to death by the town I'm living in... my Dad will want attention on Father's Day... I don't sleep well because my bed situation isn't great. There's always some distraction.

I'm part of a small local game development group that meets once a month. I don't get much done between these far apart meetings, but at least it periodically reminds me that I'm supposed to be developing a game! What actually tends to get done is easier stuff, like making a bird feeder. 'Cuz I can finish that. Even that project though, I've found a way to drag out, commensurate with my current woodworking abilities. Hey if you've made 10 bird feeders already, you can't exactly repeat yourself with the same old same old.

Thank you for taking the time to complete the survey and reply to this post.

Your feedback is very valuable.

Based on the initial survey responses, lack of time and motivation are among the main reasons creators postpone projects, struggle to get started, or abandon them during the early stages of development, particularly during prototyping. Procrastination also appears to be a recurring issue for many respondents.

That being said, once projects are more advanced, creators seem to face a different set of challenges: skill gaps, project organization, lack of visibility, difficulty finding external feedback, and limited community support. This second phase is where we believe there may be opportunities to create something genuinely useful.

Your example of the monthly game development group is particularly interesting, as it highlights the value of accountability and community involvement in helping creators stay engaged with their projects.

Thanks again for sharing your experience. Feedback like yours is exactly why we're conducting research before building anything.
