Hi everyone!
I'm a game VFX student from China, and I have about two years left before I graduate. Right now I'm focusing on Unreal Engine 5 and building my portfolio.
A while ago I took a VFX test for miHoYo. I'm still waiting for the result (although I honestly think I might not make it ๐ ), and it got me thinking about something.
From what I've seen, miHoYo seems to expect junior VFX artists to have solid technical skills, polished portfolio pieces, strong visual taste, and good design logic behind every effectโnot just something that looks flashy.
I'm wondering how similar that is to studios in North America or Europe.
For those of you working in the industry:
What do studios care about most when hiring junior VFX artists?
What separates an average portfolio from one that actually gets interviews?
Are there any skills that students often underestimate?
I'd really love to hear your experiences. Thanks in advance!
