Gamecity Hamburg awards up to €80,000 to five games in latest Prototype Funding Round

Briefing

Gamecity Hamburg has picked five projects for its latest Prototype Funding Round, handing out up to €80,000 per game in non-repayable grants. The goal is straightforward: help Hamburg-based teams turn promising concepts into market-ready prototypes without immediately relying on publisher money or self-funding the whole risk.

The funded games span a pretty familiar indie-friendly mix: Manor Cartographer, a horror puzzle adventure from Pipapo Games; Odem, a roguelike deck-builder from Odd Zeroes; Welken, a narrative survival horror game from Studio Gutheil; Ungradable: Twisted Card Grading, a horror simulation from Chasmic Drop Studio; and Wrong Horse, a murder mystery adventure from Bird Outside Studio.

For developers, the practical takeaway is that this is not just a one-off cash award. Pipapo Games, Chasmic Drop, and Bird Outside have all already been through Gamecity Hamburg’s Games Lift Incubator, which adds €15,000 plus coaching, mentorship, workshops, and individual support. That suggests a fairly structured local ecosystem: incubate, prototype, then potentially scale with external funding.

The next Games Lift Incubator application window is open until June 1, 2026, and the next Prototype Funding Round opens in September 2026. If you’re building in Germany, or thinking about how regional funding programs can bridge the gap between prototype and production, this is a useful example of a public-backed pipeline that actually funds content creation rather than just business planning.

“The awarding committee received many very good and several outstanding applications in this funding round.”
