Valve overhauls tag system on Steam to improve game discoverability
Valve has overhauled Steam’s tag taxonomy, removing 28 tags, adding 17 new classifications, and consolidating or renaming several others. The biggest cleanup targets were tags that overlapped heavily with existing content descriptors, like NSFW and Mature, plus subjective labels such as Well-Written and Masterpiece that Valve says were applied inconsistently.
A lot of the removals are about reducing ambiguity. Tags like Drama and Ambient were dropped because they applied to too few games, while franchise-specific labels such as Lego and Warhammer 40k were removed because those properties already have dedicated franchise pages. Valve also renamed Pool to Billiards after noticing it was often being used for swimming-pool-themed games rather than cue sports.
The new additions lean more toward concrete content and playstyle descriptors, including Wolves, Zoo, Bullet Haven, Desktop Companion, Organising, and Decorating. That suggests Valve is trying to make tags more useful both for players browsing by interest and for the recommendation system that depends on tag data.
For developers, this matters because Steam tags are part metadata, part marketing surface. Cleaner tags can improve discoverability if your game fits a well-defined niche, but they also reduce the chance of leaning on fuzzy praise tags or broad labels to stand out. TinyBuild’s Alex Nichiporchik also pointed out that Steam’s recommendation system can materially affect wishlists and launch performance, so tag accuracy is not just cosmetic.
