CodeDev launches optimisation division The Performance Guys
CodeDev, better known as The Unreal Guys, has formally launched The Performance Guys as a specialist optimisation division focused on performance work that tends to get pushed too late. The new group is made up entirely of engineers and technical artists, and the company is actively recruiting senior engineers to expand it.
The division has already been working on Hangar 13’s Mafia: The Old Country, along with projects for Epic Games, Otherside Entertainment, and an unannounced AAA title. CodeDev says its optimisation work has delivered substantial savings, including a cross-console overhaul that reduced memory usage by as much as 50% to meet strict platform targets.
The pitch here is less about generic support and more about deep technical triage: CodeDev says Unreal is powerful, but getting it to run cleanly requires a very specific kind of expertise that often arrives after the expensive mistakes are already baked in. That makes the new division especially relevant for teams hitting memory ceilings, CPU bottlenecks, or platform certification pressure.
CodeDev has also built an internal Performance Intelligence tool to surface more actionable data than Unreal Insights without drowning users in noise. It highlights whether spikes come from local work or dependency stalls, and whether work is landing on the wrong thread, with the goal of shortening triage and helping teams find the first controllable high-cost node faster. The company says it is targeting Unreal, Unity, and proprietary tech across indie, AA, AAA, virtual production, and high-end visualisation work.
“Unlocking its full potential and getting a game to run flawlessly takes a really specific type of technical expertise.”
