AppMagic: Pokémon Go generates $48.5m during 10th anniversary celebrations
Pokémon Go generated over $48.5 million in in-app purchase revenue during its 10th anniversary week, according to AppMagic estimates, and that made it the game’s strongest weekly performance ever. The surge landed during the Road to Legends event, which ran from July 6 to July 12 and stacked rotating legendary raids, Ultra Beasts, Mega Evolutions, signature move unlocks, and special backgrounds ahead of Pokémon Go Fest: Global.
For developers, the interesting part is how much revenue a well-timed event can still unlock in a seven-year-old live game. Revenue was 5.9 times higher than the previous week, and Pokémon Go ranked fourth globally among highest-grossing apps during that period. In the past 30 days, it brought in $98.1 million and logged just over four million downloads, with the US accounting for 37% of revenue and Japan 27%.
The game’s audience mix also shows how monetization and acquisition can diverge by region: India drove 22% of downloads, while the US contributed 14%. For July overall, Pokémon Go ranked seventh among the world’s highest-grossing apps, ahead of Roblox. Since launch in 2016, it has been downloaded more than 700 million times and has generated over $6.4 billion in revenue, based on AppMagic estimates.
Scopely’s acquisition of Niantic hasn’t changed the long-running stance that Pokémon Go is not getting a sequel. Scopely leadership says splitting the community would undermine the game’s core value, and any future project would need to approach the franchise from a different angle while still encouraging players to explore together.
