Dinos Collide in Explosive On-Rails Shooter Tailbreak, Out Now
Tailbreak has launched at $24.99, expanding Dead Drop Studios’ arcade-style on-rails shooter line with a new campaign and a heavier emphasis on replayable systems. The game supports solo play or local two-player co-op across its full story mode, which follows Alex and Rin through Cypress Ridge as dinosaurs tear through the city.
For developers, the interesting part is how Tailbreak layers classic light-gun pacing with modern progression hooks. The item system limits players to two carried items, forcing constant tradeoffs between healing, ammo, grenades, and other pickups. Score performance feeds unlocks, including new starting weapons, weapon upgrades, and abilities, so the game ties moment-to-moment survival directly into long-term progression.
The Mutation Matrix mode is the biggest systemic hook: it semi-procedurally randomizes enemies, weapons, items, and other encounter elements, and it can also remix dinosaurs with zombies and mutated monsters outside story mode. That makes it a useful example of how to extend a relatively linear shooter with roguelite-style variability without rebuilding the core combat loop.
On the production side, Tailbreak is also a showcase for UE5-era presentation in a smaller arcade package. Dead Drop is using Unreal Engine 5.7 for ray-traced lighting and higher-end visuals on Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Xbox ROG Ally X via XPA. The result is a fairly specific blend of retro structure, modern rendering, and score-driven progression that should be of interest to teams working on compact action games with strong replay value.
