Square Enix Q1 profit soars following Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth launch on Switch 2 and Xbox
Square Enix posted a sharp first-quarter rebound, with profit climbing 175.5% to ¥13.2 billion ($82.9 million) on net sales of ¥78.4 billion ($492.3 million), up 32.3%. Operating income rose 88.6% to ¥17 billion ($106.7 million), and the company’s Digital Entertainment segment did most of the heavy lifting.
HD Games were the standout, with net sales nearly doubling to ¥17.7 billion and operating income jumping 510% to ¥6.1 billion. The biggest driver was the strong launch of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth on Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S, and the Microsoft Store, after earlier releases on PS5 and Windows. Sales were also helped by The Adventures of Elliot: The Millennium Tales, catalog back-catalog momentum, and additional releases including Octopath Traveler, Octopath Traveler 2, Star Ocean: The Second Story A, and Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster on Switch 2.
MMO revenue also improved, with net sales up 32.2% to ¥12.7 billion, while operating income held at ¥3.6 billion. Square Enix tied the stronger user activity to the announcement of a Final Fantasy 14 expansion pack, while noting some expense recognition ahead of the planned early-2027 release.
Games for Smart Devices/PC Browser grew as well, with net sales up 35.6% to ¥19.4 billion and operating income up 72.7% to ¥5.7 billion, supported by Dissidia Duelum Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest Smash/Grow. Unit sales reached 7.38 million for the quarter, up from 4.01 million a year earlier, with downloads accounting for 6.65 million. The company kept its full-year forecast unchanged.
