Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy – Why This Is Far More Than A Plague Tale 3
Asobo is using Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy to break from the series’ stealth-first formula and build a more combat-driven action-adventure. The studio says a straight A Plague Tale 3 was off the table after Hugo’s ending in Requiem, so the team chose Sophia as the lead because her more aggressive, active personality fit the new gameplay direction.
That shift changes more than combat. The team says the game’s structure, level design, cinematics, and even dialogue had to be rethought around freer movement, grappling, and player-driven encounters. Instead of Amicia’s heavily signposted traversal, Resonance lets players jump and climb more broadly, which creates the opposite design problem: constraining freedom just enough to keep spaces readable and encounters controlled.
The setting also pushes the studio into more original worldbuilding. Resonance draws from a forgotten Minoan-inspired civilization, with a new take on the Macula and a story that alternates between Sophia’s era and ancient Minoan times. That means inventing more of the universe from scratch while still preserving the franchise’s visual identity: painterly vistas, thick fog, and volumetric lighting.
For developers, this is a useful case study in sequel positioning. Asobo is keeping the IP’s tone and themes of grief and fate, but changing genre, traversal rules, and encounter design to avoid repeating itself. Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy launches August 27 on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, and Game Pass, with Xbox Play Anywhere support.
