Defold adds support for Microsoft Xbox
Defold announced official Microsoft Xbox support in Defold 1.14.0, available free of charge to approved Xbox developers. That puts the engine on all three major console families: Microsoft Xbox, PlayStation 4/5, and Nintendo Switch.
For teams already using Defold on PC, mobile, or web, the practical value is straightforward: one codebase can now target another major console platform, with the usual platform-specific integrations layered on top. Defold says the Xbox extension includes user management, game saves, build/bundle/test workflow guidance, and access to Xbox-specific developer support.
Access still runs through Microsoft’s approval process, including ID@Xbox or another publishing path, followed by a request through Defold’s Xbox middleware page. The required development tools can’t be distributed directly because of NDA restrictions, so approved teams will need to follow the manual for setup.
The broader takeaway is that Defold is now a more complete cross-platform option for smaller teams that want to keep engine overhead low while still targeting consoles. The foundation is also pointing to existing commercial releases on Switch and PlayStation as proof that the pipeline is already in use, with Xbox now joining the mix.
