Free C/C++ Class

As soon as people realise that you have to actually do some work to learn C++, they lose interest. I have a feeling that anyone who really wants to learn C++ wont be able to learn it at a rate which satisifes them in online classes. Its just not something you can learn in a few hours every week. Anyone who really wanted to learn would probably outgrow the classes in a week or two by doing research of their own.

I don't believe that is true, there is some trouble with motivation. But we all take classes in college which are exactly the same as this, I think some people would love the benefit of not actually having to pay for such a class; though Im not saying mine will be as good as your college will offer it is probably the closest thing they can get right now. I learned as well by having a mentor whom I asked questions, in fact I did coding for him as well.

I think his application proccess is quite good. Anyone willing to put in some effort into answering his questions relatively intelligently should do just fine in an online class.

Good choice of questions too.

there are a lot of typos in the file though :-\. that's kinda bad considering he wants you to send him a reply with all typos. i'm writing an application right now. i'm not sure if i'll send it yet or not

If you do happen to hold a class, when will it start? Also, any estimate on how long the class as a whole will last? It was actually my summer project to learn and better understand c++.

I agree with quant. Every person I know that's ever actually learned any programming language, and knew it well, did so because they wanted to. They read STL documentation for fun.

You can "learn" C++ by doing classes, but you can't really "learn" C++..

Of course why would you do anything you dont want to do? including taking a class?

I don't think even I read STL documentation for fun :P, I have enough trouble reading other more important things :).

Point being, this class will help YOU learn, if you WANT to, without having to spend years doing it.

I was going to have you guys decide how long it will take, I believe it will take about a month or so. With one or two lectures a week.

This sounds interesting, because although I have a solid foundation in C++ and some DirectX (DirectDraw) experience, your class still sounds intriguing with its discussion of BSP trees and other dvanced topics.

Question though: when and how are the lectures going to be given? Are you just going to post notes online or a live video feed or what?

While I am still receiving apps I am not replying yet to the emails. I will send out acknowledgement emails soon, I dont want to start sending out important/info emails before everyone that wants to, jumps on the boat.

I believe that classes help develop the theory behind the concepts. A class can help you understand and get past the hurdles that self teaching just can't help with... most of the self taught programmers I know often lack the ability to jump right into new concepts with ease or the ability to work in a team with people of different ability.

I think I could manage the class in my schedule. I have already learned C++ but basically have only programmed small applications and game mods, but that was a few years ago. It is free anyways, why not?

Just to erase any doubts, he does know his bits and bytes (Wreakon and I have worked together in the past), along with his C\C++ and everything else he will teach... I might even join for his lecture on BS Trees.
