BBC Link Well it didn't take long at all for the pirates to get their hands on this one. I really wonder who these people are that get access to it before it is even released! Disgraceful!

How is this even newsworthy? Every game is pirated. Doom 3 is no exception.

This is why poorly coordinated release dates are bad, mmmkay?

I thought it was because the game was not released yet but it seems some shops have been selling it early... Wish I knew where they were [smile]

If you think about it, the weeks leading up to the release of the game is spent pressing the CDs, creating the packaging/manuals, assmbling and distributing. There's a lot of people invovled in all that and it'd be quite easy for someone somewhere to 'lose' a copy.

mwuahahahahahaha

I already knew this and know precisely where to download it, I was wondering how long it would take for it to get posted :x

BTW, I'm not downloading it...

I don't think this belongs in the 'appreciation' thread.. then again i could be wrong.

Fewer people than you'd think, I reckon. I mean, pressing the CDs is done using a lot of automated equipment - you don't need many people to run it. Packaging/manuals is similar - automated production line, plus they wouldn't be near the CDs. Assembly, again, is automated. All those places tend to have security in place anyway to make sure that things don't just go walkabout like you say.

It's distribution and retail where the problems occur - truckers who sell a copy to a friend instead of shipping it, and stores that either (a) don't police their employees properly (ie one steals a copy from the back room), or (b) refuse to abide by official release dates and try to get the jump on the competition by releasing early.

In any case, I agree with Estese - it's a game that got pirated. The fact that it's Doom 3 is largely irrelevent.

I also suspect the magazines and web sites to which advance copies are sent.

For each copy of their game that they send out (to reviewers, distributor, etc) they should, at compile time, hard code an internal serial number into the game that can be referenced from a command line or something. That way iD can download the game when it's leaked and see whether or not the serial is the one used for GamePro's copy, or if it was from the copy that went gold and so on.

they should simply make it so that the game won't run if you don't log into some authentication server when playing.

Yes, I fully believe it's a safe assumption that anyone playing your game has internet access available.

Yes, it would suck if you were travelling and wanted to play. Oh well.

That system has so many flaws and ways around it though

i mean, steam doesn't really prevent people from pirating copies of Half Life, even thyough there's no middle man. Somewhat interesting dilemma, IMO

What can you do.

Me? No.

Even if I wanted to (which I don't), it wouldn't be worth playing on an Athlon 1.3 with a GF4 MX 440. Playable, but not worth playing.

They could just disassemble the exe and cut that part out, just as they do with CD-checks and like every other anti-piracy measure.
