UPDATE [25 January 2007] The 2007 Directory of GameDev.net Teams (gdteams) is now online. Before we make the wiki totally public, meaning editable by anyone, I need a few volunteers to help move the information from the old website to the new website. This includes categorization tasks. Contact me if you're interested. # 2006 Directory of "Teams That Can" [Edited by - Adraeus on January 25, 2007 3:02:58 AM]

This is a very good idea. I didn't have the time to continually update the list, but I thought it was something that the community needed.

Will you function as moderator for the wiki page and check up on added projects? I think it's important to make sure that the three rules of the list (especially the one that requires the project to be at 'screenshot stage') are enforced to maintain the relevancy of the list. I can easily imagine that some people might add their projects for publicity, or start fighting over who goes in what order on the list, so a moderator would be good to have.

Hypothetically, every responsible wiki editor will function as a moderator, but yes, I consistently check the recent changes and verify contributions, if any.

I've included my project on the list, Im under NDA from Artificial Studios so I cant release ingame shots just yet. But I can provide any amount of content images, other game screenshots (Older engines) and any other content you may require. There will also be a new site this weekend (We were hacked last week).

Cheers

The list is a good motivator for new/inprogress groups to stay together.

Note: The wiki will likely move to a new domain when I figure out a good game development-related domain name, unless GDNet is willing to setup its wiki. If you have any suggestions for the domain name, please privately message me.

Independent game developers may use the wiki and create an article about their project. I'm willing to host this information including screenshots. You just need to privately message me so that you may send me the files to upload. (Only wiki administrators, like me, have access to the upload function.) This is especially important for projects that do not have websites online *yet*.

Gosh.

There is 4 MMO in this list. And you'll still say that creating an MMO is too hard for an indie team ? :)

BTW, good work: a list like this is very interesting.

Regards,

This is teams that can, not teams that will.

Great idea though. When I have significant progress on my project and my site/demo up and running I'll be sure to plug myself on in there!

I'd like to see a little more detail in the wiki rather than just name of game (+ link) and genre. What is/are the target platforms? Is the game freeware, shareware, pay-to-play, etc? Just a few things like that to help the person browsing the list to get a better idea of whether they are interested in the game or not.

Added. Done. Some projects, however, do not feature platform and license information on their websites.

Great idea... I had really enjoyed the old list that was up and was sad to see it go down as a pinned topic in these forums.

The original "Teams That Can" list was very motivating in the early days of my own project, and I'm glad to see it back: just one more reason to get noses to the grindstone!

A small complaint. "License" is a rather ambiguous term in the way it's used here. I don't really know if you "license" freeware/shareware, as it implies the nature/cost under which the software is distributed. The GPL, on the otherhand, lays out the rules of distribution, modification, and usage of the software. Furthermore, from the GPL Terms and Conditions:

Quote:

You may charge a fee for the physical act of transferring a copy, and you may at your option offer warranty protection in exchange for a fee.

So software licensed under the GPL may be free, or it may not be free. When a typical game user sees "license" in this case, they probably care about the price. Although most software under the GPL (and I imagine all GPL games on that list) are distributed free of charge, saying a game is licensed under the GPL still does not determine free of cost versus not free of cost.

Blegh, didn't mean to sound like a snob/whiner there, but I just wanted to point that out. Maybe there can be a cost category in addition to license, or we can designate games "GPL (free)" and "GPL (pay)". On another note, Allacrost isn't jsut a Win32 platform (for shame!). I fixed that in the wiki [wink]

All we need now is the GameDev Indie Game Awards. :) Just imagine the possible catergories... Best FPS, Best MMO, Best Overall, Graphics, Technology etc. Everyone just has to send in a playable demo to be nominated... ;)
